speaker intall question

hey all, tried askin this on sounddomain but i cant get the forum register to work. so eh, here we go. puttin together a 8 speaker sound system, and got a question, the way im lookin to wire the speakers up, its going to either drop the ohms from 4 to 2, or raise them from 4 to 8. im looking at the 2 ohm setup, by wiring the speakers in parralel. i have all the specific numbers if yall need em. but i just want to know if i might damage the speakers by running them in parralel at 2 ohms instead of the 4 they are rated at. anybody have a clue??

Re: speaker intall question

yeah i asked my bro, and he thinks the weak link would be the headunit, by dropping the resistance to 2 Ohms, i might fry the internal amp. so looks like i might have to wire the speakers in series, but i emailed sony to find out. i think it will handle it. its a pretty serious head unit.

Re: speaker intall question

Dude here it is, If ur talking subs if the amp and speaker is rated to go down to 2ohms than it is fine. If not it u will mess one of them up either the amp will blow or the speaker. If u are talking about 6x9's 51/4 or basic speakers I would just hook them up direct from the deck because most decks and those kinds of speaker arn't made to run either of those ohm. U will get the best sound wiring direct K for those. If u are trying to get more bass by lower the ohms on theose speakers don't they will blow!! Also if u are looking fior bass and don't want weight or don't have enough room. I would recomend geting the bazoca 6.5 in 100watt powered bas cannon. This will wire in to ur existing speaker channels with ur speakers. It hits and sounds really good. Also it has RCA out puts so u can add amps if u ran out of RCA out puts on ur deck. I hace this 1971 Camaro and have 2 pioneer 6x9's up behind the sets and with a pioneer deck, a bazoca bas conon that one i has talking about. I just used the RCA's out of the bass cannon to go to my 800watt legacy with mu Audiobahn 10 in a band pass box it sound awsome. My deck goes up to 30 volume and I cant turn it past 14 on rap and 12 at most on rock it can defin u. Give it a try and let me know what u do.

Re: speaker intall question

thanx for the advice zboom, my problem is that while i have heard complaints about the sony xplods blowing out, ive been running them in my RS for a quite a while, and never had a problem. in fact, very pleased with them. also the main deal is that my car is black and red, so the black and red stereo equipment looks sweet when mounted so you can see them. im going for a very smooth, very factory appearing instalation. also not interested in subs at the moment. not really nessesary for what im into, im not trying to build a competition system. just something that will handle the music i throw at it. which the stock system, or at least the crappy system that was in teh car when i bought it, couldnt do. right now im narrowed down to wiring the system in series and taking the hit on power output, or getting an amp, im lookin at one now thats 75 watts RMS per channel at 2 Ohms, 4 channels, so ill probly bite the bullet and run that. just have to figure out where im gonna mount the damn thing so its either not visible or dosnt look tacky. probly under the storage lid in my hatchback, protected by a mesh grill. eh, didnt want one, but guess i gotta.

Re: speaker intall question

actually mounting under the passenger seat is a possiblity, driver seat has the power plug for the six way adjuster switch i plan on putting back in sooner or later. speaker locations are as flows,

dash 2x 4x6in speakers
doors 1x each, 6.5in speakers
sail panels 1x each, 6x9in speakers,
rear cargo cover from bose system, 2x 6.5in speakers,

so 8 in all. and the bose system cover had a hidden surprise, the stock speakers are only 4in, and actually have three instead of four screws, but the speaker covers are four hole, and are the same mounting pattern as a 6.5in speaker, ive already tested it with a older set of xplods, and they fit. so i can take advantage of teh box design bose used to make bass with the 4in speakers. so because i have that locking cover, i might put the amp down under it, mounted to the sheet metal against where the gas tank is, yeah yeah, ill be carfull, i wont drill into the tank. that or seeing as ive already got the carpet out, ill just have mounting studs welded in so i dont ahve to drill through the sheetmetal, so if i ever return the car to stock, i can just grind off the studs, and not have damaged sheetmetal. but yeah thats what im lookin at now, ive got the bose cover mocked up, so if i can get my digial camera working, ill post some pics to show ya what im talkin about.

Re: speaker intall question

ooo ok, yea the sheetmetal thing sounds like a good idea, and in my maro, there a compartment in the rear on the left, right across from the spare tire, maybe that could be used for the placement of the amp

heres the pics of what im lookin to do, these sonys arent the ones im looking to use, but they are the only 6.5in speakers i had lying around to test fit.

heres how the lid looks from the factory...

a speaker with the bose grill removed..

and the hole with the speaker removed...

here with the sonys in there..

heres the bottom showing the speaker boxes, that also hold the amps..

and here if you look to the right, youll see the round vent port....

so basicly this lid turns the whole trunk space into a vented box. it covers the storage well in the trunk behind the t-tops, and locks against the trim peice that covers the hatch pull down. so the sonys fit, and will look stock, and will hide the amp from prying eyes so long as i mount it down in the storage well as far as the dash doors and sail panels, i think everyone knows what those installations look like.

Re: speaker intall question

ooooo ok, i gotcha now, so it just hides the hold storage area in the rear, so you got that flat part behind the seat and then it just angles up to the window right?

Re: speaker intall question

right place, wrong look. the bose lid dosnt angle up like the ones on the fourth gens, if you take the flat part of the trunk where the T-tops sit, and just keep it going strait back so that it hits the rear trim thats where this lid goes, so its just one big flat area, with the storage well under the flip up lid. thats what this will look like. currently the IROC is dead in the water at work with a VATS problem, so i dont have it here to mock it up, but when i get her home ill lay the lid down in there and put up a pic of what it will look like, cuz to be honest, im kinda curious myself.
