96 Discovery...To buy or not to buy?
I am brand new to this forum and this is my first post...and I'm glad it's here!
I'm looking at a 96 Discovery with just over 100K miles on it. I don't know much about Land Rover other than a good reputation for making solid off roading machines. I had a good look underneath the truck and was pleasantly surprised at how basic it actually is under there! I've been reading some of the past-posts and so far it sounds like it would be a good choice. I currently own a Toyota 4X4 so I know all about expen$ive repairs and maintenance. If anyone has some "inside scoop" they'd like to share it would be much appreciated. Cheers. |

Re: 96 Discovery...To buy or not to buy?
There are two things that I can think of on this model of disco. One is the transmission, just make sure it is shifting smoothly while driving. The other thing being the lifters of the engine. They are sometimes a problem on the older discos, and I am not sure if that included 96, but I think it would. Listen to the engine carefully from a cold start up until it warms up to see if you hear any noises. Other than that, it is probably a solid truck for you. Beware, any car over 100,ooo miles is going to manifest more problems than one with less miles because every part on there has done a lot more work than if it had only gone say 70,000. But if LR's are taken care of, they will run forever.

Thanks for the reply, and for the advice.
Actually just went and did the deal on it today so I'm pretty pumped! Cheers. |
