94 5.7 timing

I replaced the distributor because I wasn't getting gas or spark. This corrected the problem but now I cant get the timing set right. I disconnect the brown and black striped wire from under the glove box before timing. After the timing is set I plug wire back in and the timing is way off, coughing and sneezing thru carb. No matter what I do the timing is off and vehicle won't run correctly. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like your distributor is off a tooth.

My only suggestion would be to start over at TDC, pull the dist. and reinstall a tooth over from where you are now.

Hope this helps.
