Engine runs horribly on acceleration after Crank sensor replacement
Was wondering anyone had any ideas on my 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee . At first it was running fine other than the engine shutting down as if you turned the key off. Sometimes it would fire up sometimes it wouldn't until it sat for 30 seconds or more. So far my husband who is a mechanic has given it a tune up -which it needed- including wires, plugs, & distributor cap. Replaced has been the cam position sensor, mat sensor, oxygen sensor, air intake temp sensor (dealer diagnosed that previously) changed the fuel filter and the coil. When it shut down on me last and
wouldn't restart was when he changed the coil and while tinkering sprayed starter fluid in the intake and it fired up. It would start and idle for awhile then shut off. Fuel pump is fine. He is at a loss so we hauled it into the dealership for diagnostics. They scanned it again and said it was the crankshaft position sensor so we said fine, change it. Now it starts and idles fine. Problem now is that when you accelerate it runs horribly. Spits, pops, cracks and backfires. The dealer doesn't really know what is wrong and we dont' want to spend $70 an hour to try and figure it out. They are suggesting the tone ring or the PCM now. Before we took the Jeep into the dealer for the Crank sensor it was running fine other than engine shutting down. It has 191,700+ on it. Any suggestions? |

Re: Engine runs horribly on acceleration after Crank sensor replacement
Classic symtoms of cam\crank timming jump, when your hubbie sprayed the starter fluid in there it caused a pre ignition back fire, the motor tries to go the wrong direction qite ubruptly, and because the timing chain is worn out it jumped a tooth. sorry for the bad news. if your hubby is a mechanic he should be able to do the job if he has the right damper puller and text. make sure he gets a good manual for the jeep and follow the step by step.

Re: Re: Engine runs horribly on acceleration after Crank sensor replacement
Thanks for answering. It still ran fine after the starter fluid other than it shut down again. He did mention the timing and that that was what it sounded like to him when we picked it up from the dealership yesterday. As of this moment it is still sitting on the trailer and will probably stay there until he gets his truck put back together this week. Thought I would in the meantime see what other info I could reap.

Re: Re: Re: Engine runs horribly on acceleration after Crank sensor replacement
Found the problem... new crank sensor wasn't testing the correct ohms and the coil wire was loose. Runs great now. So much for the "professionals" at this particular dealership.
