Re: mixing gears..

i would think no. i cant honestly think of a technical reason why they wouldnt work cause i dont know much bout gears, but my intuition says no. seems like the way gears work it wouldnt be possible...

Re: mixing gears..

i would think that the pinion angle would be different or there would be a problem with the difference in the number of teeth...

it can be done, but i have no clue of what combinations you would use. my friend's camaro came with 2:73's and someone messed around in there before he got it. when i counted the teeth i came up with some goofy shit number.

Re: mixing gears..

i would have to say its probably not gunna work. but honetly i could be wrong. there are just to many variables to be sure, unless you try it . but if you look some gear ratios use the same gear in some cases. but who knows it the space between the teeth are changed or something. who knows. i guess it could be posible, but for a real answer you might call someone like Richmond and see what they say. and then try it. i know that would sure make swaping gears alot easier cuz then you dont have to mess the the pinon nut, crush sleve, and all that crap. 200ft.lbs. is alot and thats the one thing i hate the most is trying to get the crush sleave set correctly.

Re: mixing gears..

i wouldnt do it, there is a number value that matches, if the distance from peak to peak on the pinion gear teeth is different than the distance from peak to peak on the ring gear teeth, than even if it matches up now, you run the risk of them actually crawling up over themselves at some point which would cause all kinds of shit in the ass end of the car, peices flying every which a way. i would not do it.

i guess i forgot to mention that the ring and pinion in my friends camaro broke in the 2000 miles after he got it. when i changed the gears for him i noticed that there were a bunch of shims under the pinion. 2 of the ring gear teeth broke, which broke 3 of the pinion teeth, and then the teeth got into the spiders and completely shattered one of the side spiders. i would doubt that your 3:42's would work with 4:10's. i think the 4:10 probly has a much smaller pinion, and thicker ring gear than the 3:42's
