Check Engine Light

I want to revisit an old problem and see if I can get a response from anyone this time.
I replaced the 1.9 engine in my 94 Escort. Along with the engine, both the crank sensor and cam sensor were replaced.
Since its installation, the check engine light has been on and I have retrieved code 214 (Cylinder Identification Error) from continous memory.
Now, as I said both sensors are new. I have verified that the timing is set correctly. Everything is plugged in. What would cause this error? As I understand it, if the crank sensor was bad the plugs would not fire, so I assume the sensor is good. The CEL was on before the cam sensor was replaced, so I know the cam sensor is not the problem.
I understand now what the error code means and what the sensors do, but I can not determine what is causing the code to appear. I have cleared the code from the computer after every repair attempt and it continues to appear.
The car seems to run fine even though the CEL is on.
Anyne have any ideas what I should look at to solve this? What else is in this Cylinder Identification Circuit that would cause the CEL to come on?

check that the wires from the sensors or not being interfered with other signals i/e injector, tps or other.make sure the route of c.p.s and crank sensor follow manufacturers plan.

Thansk for the input... that is something new I can check on. I suppose it is possible when I put he wiring harness back on that I ran the wires in a different way than how they were...
That doesn't seem likely to be the problem, but it is certainly worth checking it out...

Are your plugs for your cam sensor and your crank sensor, plugged into the right sensor, and not switched? Don't know if its possible, but jus a thought off the top of my head...I'm clueless

Is your Crank Damper on correct? That's what the crank sensor reads from correct? So if it is reading diff from ur cam sensor, would you get the same code??? Jus another thought...

It is not possible to switch the two plugs. They are on opposite ends of the engine. The damper only goes on one way... nothing wrong there. The timing has been checked, rechecked, and checked again, then once more just to be sure.
The routing of the wires seems to be worth checking out though. These wires are so short I can't imagine having fed them through the wrong way somewhere, but I will check it out.

Well I went back and checked... it is just about impossible to route the wires wrong to these sensors. They wire to the cam sensor is on one end of the harness that goes to the fuel injectors and the wire to the crank sensor is on the other end... not enough lenght in either of them to possibly route them wrong.
I know that there is nothing wrong with the sensors... I wonder if the ECM itsself is outta whack? I have checked the timing, checked the sensors, checked the wires, cleared the codes, checked the routing of the wires.... what in the world causes this error code???

dumb question.....tried leaving your battery unhooked overnight to reset the computer? You might be clearing the code, but if the computer is outta whack, it's gonna find the problem anyway.

Nope.. not a dumb question. There is absolutely no information on this subject anywhere I have looked. There are references to the code, but no information regarding troubleshooting it.
The battery was disconencted for nearly two weeks at one point while I was not driving it. The code continues to reappear.

dang Moose, I talked to my buddy (mechanic for local Ford dealer) he said sensors (Cam & Crank) I told him both were new then he said..."hmm...got me stumped" Sorry man, I'll still search for ya cuz im curious...
