help shifting plz

hey all, i just got a 97 sunfire gt 5 speed. This is my first car and i have never driven standard before, i'm starting to get the hang of it after practicing abit, and i know how to shift, but i'm having some trouble starting after coming to a complete stop in first gear, i either stall or its really jerky.(eg. at a stop sign, i have trouble getting the car goin again) Anybody have any suggestions or ways to help me get a smooth start?
Any advice would be appreciated Thanx Brad.

Re: help shifting plz

Practice!

When starting in first, try bringing the revs up to about 1500-2000 then ease the clutch out. Really it's just a matter of figuring out the balance of how much gas to give it and how much clutch to let out. When facing up hill you will need to give it a little more gas and let the clutch out a little faster, and when facing down hill you can be a little more leisurely with the clutch. In theory you should be able to take your car to a parking lot and figure how to let the clutch out without giving it ANY gas, though I don't reccommend this for street driving. After a while driving a stick will become second nature. I live in a hilly area and I still prefer to drive a car with a manual trans.

Keep in mind that every car is different. After you become comfortable driving your car you will find that driving a friends car with a manual trans will take a little getting familiar with.

Hopes this helps!
