2004 EX Automatic shifting problem

Lately I have noticed ANOTHER problem with my expensive new car.

Sometimes after starting (which most times it starts like an 85 year old man gets out of bed, this after they "replaced" a "defective" fuel pressure regulator at 1K miles) when I shift into reverse to back out of my space, I hear a relatively loud "thump". It doesn't happen all the time, but it does indeed happen. I am on a completely flat surface by the way.

Does anyone else have this issue? My car barely has 4K miles on it and I'm starting to research the California Lemon Law...I'm serious.

I have the same problem with my 2000 Accord EX The first time it happened, I honestly thought I hit a cat or something! If I back out very slowly, it's less noticeable but when I'm in a hurry...forget it...there's that loud thump like you said. It's really annoying!

Still under warranty, I took it back to the dealer and wouldn't you know it, it NEVER did it while he was in the car. Guess I'll have to take it back to him again...I hate parting with it though.

On a different note, I've had this car less than a year and have been rear ended TWICE already!! The second time was just recently and the guy tried to pull a hit and run on me!!! Funny thing is...He couldn't outrun me...:-)

Same thing with me

When I had the service guy in the car, it never made the "thump"! I have a feeling it is just when the car is cold and I don't have it happen too often now.

As to outrunning...I had mine easily to 110 the other day :o)) I really need to watch out though due to existing speeding tickets on my license.

I have a '99 AV6 and i've noticed the same thing. It only seems to happen when the car has been sitting overnight, or when the engine is cold. It's not always noticeable, but sometimes it is. Does anyone have a VTEC Controller in their AV6? i'm wondering how noticeable it is when you put the engagement point lower, i was thinking around 2000. does anyoneone know what it is set at from the factory? I think it's around 3500, but i'm not sure. All i know is that i smoked some dude in a blue neon with more money in his car than mine cost! At 105 i was easily three car lengths ahead of him, and that's when i cut out. Thanks for the help.

Accord V6 transmission

I bought my V6 Accord new and noticed simialar transmissions "clunks" within a few thousand miles. I was pissed to find out that they had some problems with those transmissions, but they replaced mine under warranty. Talk about a bad first impression of your new car. I'd go see the dealer, hopefully with a TSB in hand.
Good Luck

2003-2004 Transmission recall

There is a recall out for V6 auto transmissions for 2003 and 2004. Go to Honda's website and find their customer service number and they can tell you if it applies to you. You'll need your VIN

TCS check

It might be the TCS system check..if your car has been sitting a while and you start it applies the brakes as it is entering 2nd gear. this will give you a a slight hitch pretty much every time..hope this is the answer your looking for

Re: 2004 EX Automatic shifting problem

There are 2 things it might be:
1. brake slop at the caliper
2. the design with no bands creates gear mesh slap. It's more noticable cold cause there's no oil film.

Hi, I have a similar problem, I posted under "jamoosee" 2003 scrape / clunk title. (Sorry I don't know how to link directly)

The dealer twice could not duplicate the problem. I could with the service mgr in the driver seat but he could not hear it. I can actually feel it in the gas pedal sometimes.

Any solutions yet ??? I have not been able to find one. My 3 yr basic warranty expires in 2 weeks.

Man, people seem to love old threads. In this case it's so old it spans a THREE model years of "new cars!"
