buying a 97 z28
ok, so, im sick and tired of searching and searching for a car, ive gone from early camaros, to stangs, to eclipses (turbos), and now camaros again....i found a 97 z28, with 73k miles from a dealer. it's got a 6 speed and is going for $10,000. i looked it up in kelly blue book and this is just 300 over what KBB said. im just thinking, god, 73 thousand miles, theres gotta be something about to go wrong!
can any1 give me some info on things i should look out for? thanks! |

Re: buying a 97 z28
yea, thats alot of miles, well if it was mostly highway drivin then its ok, my dad bought a 96 bronco a few years ago off ebay for 5,000 kbb on it was 13,000, it had 108,000 miles on it and it was mostly highway miles, and its running strong, does it have any mods on it? have you test drivin it yet, i wouldnt wanna buy anyones race car

Re: buying a 97 z28
exactly, well, it doesnt list any mods, and its from a dealer, so its not a lemon. im going to test drive it this saturday. if it has any mods, than no fuckin way im gunna buy it, no way in hell......i also see a 96 SS with 45k miles, but its $14 grand, and thats like 4 over my limit (i COULD get the extra 4, but i dont want to). i also figure that since the z28 has so many miles, than it would be much easier to bargain on.
still though, anything to look out for? |

Re: buying a 97 z28
umm, check the tires, see if the rears are worn down alot, and look at the fronts in case they switched them, make sure it shifts good and check all the gauges, check the oil, and tranny fluid, make sure its nice and clean and dont smell burnt

Re: buying a 97 z28
ok, sounds simple enough. do you think it would be possible to bargain the price on teh SS down at all? like, i would rather have THAT, for multiple reasons, but the price is just too high.

Re: buying a 97 z28
yea you could always try, be like man i think this car was raced, its pretty obvious and others will be able to tell, you kno bs like that..lol, oo and since its a dealer car im pretty sure they might have changed all the fluids.... oo and you could also look for rubber in the wheel wells lol

Re: buying a 97 z28
well, i guess that was a stupid question to ask cause i just remembered that the guy mentioned that it was another employe's brother's car...dunno if thats bs or not, but if its true than there wouldnt be any negotiation.

Re: buying a 97 z28
get the vin number, and do a carfax. not the most reliable thing in the world, but definately a good jump on the car. have to agree with chevyracincamaro - should be able to see anything wrong physically w/ the car. also, test drive the hell out of it. mine was fine when i test drove it. the day i bought it, i left the lot, spun a little tiny bit, and killed it. don't pussyfoot w/ the car. make sure it's going to be worth the money.

Re: Re: buying a 97 z28
Three basic problems that go wrong with a 4 gen in the 93-97 range.
1. A.I.R pumps they go bad sometimes but, it will trigger the check engine light. 2. Opti-spark distributor they are junk to start with. When they go bad they arch spark to different cylinders. 3. Water pumps are the most common problem, when they get into the 70k to 90k range the seals usually go out and they seep anti-freeze. I'd replace the pump even if you don't think it's bad it's just good insurance. $14k for a 96 SS with 45k sounds a bit high. I paid $8500 for mine with 82k. And my brother paid $15k for a 96 ss 6 spd conv. with 16k on it.

Re: buying a 97 z28
i give almost 27K with 11 miles on my 2000 ss.
and by the way the bumper looks excellent, everyone complements the center mounted exhaust tips. |

Re: buying a 97 z28
That SS must have a Gold Bumper support or something
