97 Park Ave. Fuel Gauge

I could really use some help here. The fuel gauge dial/arm? for some reason jumped the pin. How do I access the fuel gauge arm to reset to the right hand side of the pin that it rests against when you shut the engine off?

Did you lose battery power recently?

First thing to try is disconnect the battery for 10 seconds and reconnect if it doesn't swing the needle back, then you need to remove the cluster, take the lens off and move it by hand.

I came across some older postings....nice to see I was not the only one with this type of problem. Followed previous instructions on how to correct. One hour later the dial was reset and working fine.

Next problem....how to change wheel bearing (front driver myself).

My fuel gauge flipped out about a month ago. Now it is also stuck on the left side of the pin. I took the car to a mechanic who quoted $2,000 for the fuel gauge and the fuel sensor which he says is the cause for gauge going wild. I'm not mechanically inclined (don't know what a "cluster" is) but might be willing to tackle the instructions you followed. How mechanically adept are you? What special tools do I need?

Not to difficult to reset your dial. Check previous posts for a description. I have had to reset twice, the first time it took 1.5 hours the second about 20 minutes. You will need a rachet set (small) to remove screws that secure the trim and cluster assembly. As for $2000, tell your mechanic he is nuts. I also need a fuel gauge sensor, cost from a GM dealer and Can. Tire was about 400/$450 installed.

I have a 2000 PA same situation - get a good powerful magnet and hold it up to the fuel gauge the needle will back around to the correct position. With a good magnet you will not have to touch the clear panel - just approach it. Much better than $2,000.
