Transmission Tune Up

I was curious if anyone ever had a Transmission tune up before, i mean my car has 141K miles on it and im sure it never had a Transmission Tune up, the fuild is still pink but would it hurt to have the filter n fuild changed , i mean in this ad they say they clean the oil sump and adjust the bands and install new gaskets all for 20 Bucks so i was wondering if its worth it?

Re: Transmission Tune Up

If you take it to a place as such, make sure you stress that the tranny is performing great and you thought you'd continue to having is perform great by having new filter, fluid, etc...

I'm sure that this is how some garages get people to shell oiut 1300.00+ at the end of the day. (Not all garages... but there are many)

Re: Transmission Tune Up

I would change the fluid and filter at least. Mine's got 120k on it and the fluid was still OK-ish, but there was all sorts of gunge stuck to the magnet in the pan, so I can imagine the filter was clogged too. Can't do any harm, but it's messy! No idea about the other tune up stuff though.

Re: Transmission Tune Up

Yes, you can do the tranny filter yourself... its not really that hard. If there is no slipping, I wouldnt bother with the other stuff.

Re: Transmission Tune Up

Don't let them tell you that your transmission needs to be rebuild. They might tell you that your transmission fluid smells burned, well it always smells burned.

Re: Transmission Tune Up

These trans don't have bands to adjust. Your best bet is a trans flush, which exchanges all the fluid, even the convertor. In all my experiences, I have never seen a trans filter even close to being plugged, even with catastrophic failures. Dropping the pan and cleaning out the sludge only changes 4-5 qts. out of 10 or 11 total.

Re: Transmission Tune Up

I did it over the weekend on the 99. It's easy but messy. Get a big pan. Loosen the bolts and let it drain. Pull the pan. pull the filter out. It's a little ough, Need to wigggle around a bit. I have a seal hook puller. Used a socket to drive in the new seal. Used a plastic hammer. Replace the new filter. You have to push it into the new seal. Lube it with tranny fluid. Bolt it back up and pour about 7 or so quarts. I also use Lube Guard. I touqued the pan to about 100 inch lbs according to specs. The 99 uses a reusable gasket. I also use AC Delco parts.

If it's not slipping you should be fine.

A "Tune-Up" is a sales pitch!!! Just have the fluid & filter changed and
clean the magnets/// if there is no heavy metal particles in the pan,,,
it will be fine!!!!

Re: Transmission Tune Up

But if i change the fluid, some one told me i might start to have tranny problems, idk, my engine is great but im not so sure of the tranny, would changing the fluid put me at risk to destroy the tranny?

it's not going to hurt, change it. I have seen trans failures after fluid and filter change, but these are the trans that have been abused and forgotten about for YEARS! The fluid is black and burnt. Don't worry about it change it!
