Never had an automatic. I now have a 69 Camaro w/396 pushing 450hp. Automatic w/ shift kit & 3000 rpm stall converter. What's the best way to drive at leasure and also drag for time.

Re: Auotmatic w/shift kit
If you want to drive the car leasurely, you're going to have to ditch that stall converter and replace it with the stock unit.
As for drag racing it? Learn some more about the car and we'll talk. |

you could go with a lower stall converter, around 2000 rpms is very streetable.

Do some research. I had a 1969 GTO which had a dual stall torque converter. The stator had a two position variable pitch which was triggered by a switch on the gas pedal. when the switch was closed it changed the stall from about 1400 rpm on easy acceleration to about 2500 when floored.
This made it very streetable but also made it great for the track.

Re: Auotmatic w/shift kit
I agree with everyone so far, but here's a little extra info. Did you actually check the stall of this converter on "your" car? The stall of the converter is greatly influenced by torque. Big meats, low gears, all affect the final stall of the converter. I had a 455 olds torque monster motor in an 81 bonneville. I ran a 3:23 gear with a converter listed at 3000 RPM, and the car was a bull at the strip, and very nice to drive on the street. The converter actually locked up around 2500.
