K&N air system
My 95 has the stock air filter system and I was wondering about the K&N system. Is it hard to install, what all do I need and about how much cost wise? Any input would be greatful.

Re: K&N air system
I've heard they're easy to install, just more or less pop the old one off and put the new one on, maybe a couple bolts or something, but you shouldn't need to have lots of tools and experience. I've considered buying one also, and investigated the current air intake system on my 94 GC, and it looked pretty easy to remove from the vehicle.
Not sure about price, probably a couple hundred bucks?, I'm sure that somebody else here knows more, or maybe try searching for prices on google. |

I installed it on my 94 jeep zj last month. Took me about 20 minutes from start to finish. I picked mine up off of ebay for 240 shipped. I fully recommend doing it if you have the money.

Re: K&N air system
I have one of those K&N FIPK Intake kits, that I got a few months ago on my 04 GC, and it is good stuff, sounds nice, good power, gas mileage seems a bit better.

Re: K&N air system
The K&N FIPK kit is probably the single best thing to do if you want to upgrade engine performance. About $230 for my 96JGC. Easy to install, too. Definitely recommend if you have the money. :-)

Re: K&N air system
I know the K&N system comes with a heat shield, but does it come with something to block the opening that the stock air box covers?
After removing the stock air box on my '98 ZJ, I noticed there was a view of the tire, which would transfer water up onto the cone filter in rainy weather. Does the K&N system prevent this? |

I've noticed that one person on Car Domain had just bought a cheaper kit with a K&N filter and had just cut their factory box to prevent the heat and moisture block. The person actually painted it too to make it look nice. I have one of the cheaper kits on mine and will probably do what they did, minus the whole paint thing. I love the sound from my new filter system. I can't say I noticed any gas saving or hp performance from it, but it looks and sounds better. |

Re: K&N air system
Cutting the factory box sounds like a good a idea, it would prevent the tire from kicking up dirt & water onto the filter, but I don't think I want to cut my box!
I also have one of the cheaper setups & it sounds great! I took it off recently because the bottom of the filter was getting extremely dirty from the tire. |

can you put a cone looking air filter on the 6 cylinder engine? I really want to do this upgrade but I cant find links or anything to an air filter that i can put on my engine. I have a 96 gcl 6cylinder. my friend put a new air filter on his integra and it sounded so much cooler. Anyway...any help for this noob (me!) would be appreciated!
Thanks, EDIT: I did some research found it out.. Last edited by cactuar167; 02-25-2005 at 01:46 PM. |

Re: K&N air system
I just put the K&N FIPK system on my 94 ZJ 5.2L about a month ago. It is really good system you can actually feel the difference.
I didn't block the hole in the body that you are talking about it will help get colder ait to the system, that way all the air isn't running beside the radiator which is gonna pull heat off the radiator. as we all know cold air = more ponies. and the K&N filter is washable/reusable, so dirt and a lil water is not a problem. |

Re: K&N air system
I understand what you mean dksob81, but if you don't block the hole, all the dirt & water from the tire is kicked up onto the bottom of the filter.
I had a similar K&N setup not too long ago, I unistalled it because the bottom of the cone filter was turning black from dirt etc. If I can devise a way to block that hole, I would defintely go back to the K&N setup! Cactuar167, you can find the real K&N filter setups on ebay, as well as the cheaper versions. |

Re: K&N air system
Sups from Hawaii everybody, this is my first post.
Im still deciding which way to go, which is my best option. Keep in mind the funds are low. I know the simplest and best results would come from purchasing the fipk kit, but I would like to leave that as a last resort 1-Drop in the K&N box filter (simple replacement) 2-Throw in a cone filter onto the stock tube, cut up my stock box as a heat shield 3-Throw in a cone filter and fabricate a custom tube from mandrel bent tubing, cut up stock box as a heat shield 4-Purchase the fipk kit ($cha-ching) Which less expensive kits were you guys using besides the fipk? From the K&N site it only specifies the fipk, replacement filter and stock K&N replacement for the JGC Anyone make a custom tube? Just wondering if I could scab off some info to make my life a tad bit easier. If not, and I still make my own Ill post my plans. Thanks Dave 96 JGC 4.0L Hawaii Last edited by Heltah-Skeltah; 02-25-2005 at 08:09 PM. |

Re: K&N air system
well I haven't had that problem yet, but I will watch out for it, you might want to build a channel for that hole so it could channell the air through that hole but block tire splash.

Re: K&N air system
Well, I've been racing motocross for years, and I use a K&N filter strapped directly to the carbeurator wit no airbox whatsoever. It was constantly getting water kicked up on it, and was still providing good filtration. Now I wasn't looking for the reliability that a person is out of their Jeep, but I have never had an engine failure that was a direct result of that setup.
