My mechanic claims that it's good to use it once in a while to help clean the carbon off of either the spark plugs, or the injectors, i forget which. I'm a mechanical retard, so i have no idea if this is true or not. Maybe someone else here knows for sure.

Re: premium gas
For that motor, none really. The compression isn't high enough, and as shitty as it is 89 will work as well as 93.

for a stock 95 civic DX, you would be wasting money by putting in premium gas. since the compression isn't high enough to burn most of the premium gas=carbon deposits, ruin cat and oxygen sensor over the long run.
stick with regular and if ping/knock, use plus gas instead of premium. Gas octane number ratings means it's pre ignition performance, the higher the octane, the less pre ignition risk. high compression cars need higher octane gas because they have higher combustion temperature and using lower will increase risk of pre ignition. the most misconception about using higher octane gas is that it will give you power. If your car doesn't meet the requirements for higher octane, then you won't get any benefits. Go to Chevron or Mobil website, they will state the facts about higher octane gas. |

Re: premium gas
Ive used 91 for a while and for some reason, I get better gas mileage by like +1 or 2 miles a gallon. But it really wont have an effect. As stated already, the higher the octane rating...more resistance to pre-detonating. High octane rating is for higher performance engine with high C/R. I alwas had the misconception before that using higher octane rating will get you more power blah blah blah. Did some reading and its only a waste of money. I just use 89 even if required fuel is 87. I use 89 as "preventive maintenance" just to make me feel better and prevent maybe once in a while knocking if I used 87. But it really wont do any good using 91+ octane rating on ordinary civic engines (unless they were the B16's, K20's etc...).
