Wheel and Tire size

What determines what size and width of the a the wheels and the type of tire one puts on their car? I'll give an example of a car to work from. A 69 Camaro SS with a big V8 putting out around 500 HP and 500 pound feet of torque with a 3.55 rear and and a modern 6 speed tranny. With no limit on money, but with no intent to drag or circuit race, just highway driving.

Re: Wheel and Tire size

You've been trying to get an answer to this question for quite some time. It should be obvious that the answer is not a simple one, or someone would have answered it by now. I'll do the best I can.

The first thing you need to consider this that the tire has to have enough load capacity to carry the weight. It is always a good idea to have some reserve. So you need a tire with at least a 97 Load Index.

You have enough torque that virtually every tire is not going to have enough grip under some circumstances, but wider is better, except of course if it rains or snows. Your limiting factor is going to be the width of your fender wells.

Since you've got that much power, you're going to want to use it from time to time, so I'd recommend a V, W, Y, or Z rated tire.

BTW, don't expect these tires to last very long - that really isn't the point at all - grip is!

Hope this helps.

I haven't been asking this question for a long time at all. It popped into my head for the first time last night. I think your thinking of someone else.

Anyway, thanks for what information you did give me. It was helpfull.

Edit: if I had a sixties Camaro, it wouldn't be my daily driver, I'd drive it in good weather and probably on weekends only.

It all depends on what look your going for. There are several '67-'69 Camero's and Firebirds around where I live that have anything from 20" wheels to 31" street slicks to the standard 15" and 16" Torque Thrust wheels.

Dsilver, no offence, but I think that, at this point, everyone knows that you would advise them to talk to Grant. Your goal should be not to have your name next to all the threads, but instead it should be to help people out. Also, if people are interrested in the wheels/tires you have for sale, they should be able to look in the for sale forum and find them there.

Re: Wheel and Tire size

Hah, yeah I guess so, but not newbies, and I just like to post and read what is going on in each post, and this is the for sale forum, so what's wrong with me posting rims/tires for sale??

Yes, and this is where the for sale posts for wheels and tires should go, should they not, if not where are you suggesting that I post??

Re: Wheel and Tire size

I don't want to argue with you, but if it where me that had something for sale, I would also post it in this forum, but in it's own thread. Start a new thread and if anyone is interrested, they will reply to it.

Re: Wheel and Tire size

Agreed, Im not trying to piss you off either and I do have my own thread for them, but I figure if I spread out my posts wherever it looks like someone might be interested, my stuff for sale gets more exposure.
