Re: crappy start olds 88

Try removeing the whole Igition control module (( coils and bottom )) and sand the back of it clean and the mount on the motor ... the Aluminum to Aluminum corrodes and you add a little power it forms Aluminum Oxide which is a great insulator, hence you get a bad ground on the unit and this causes all sorts of problems ....... (( and you can also give it a thin coat of antiseize and it'll last alot longer, plus it makes removeing it later in life a breezze... )) And this is a common problem which seems to correct it self when the engine warms up (( and the metal expands )), And this has fixed several cars I've seen and cost you nothing other then a few mins of your time ...

And are you getting a Service engine light or not (( this will not cause the light to come on either )) If so let us know and I'll tell you how to get the codes from it and how to go from there .....

hope this helps you out ...

Re: crappy start olds 88

Don't forget about the spark plug wires itself. Older spark plug wires suffers misfire if there is moisture in the engine. Cheap spark plug wires does not have a good insulation.
BTW, make sure your spark plug wires are separated from each other with a spark plug wire sepator and use some tie wrap to move them away from the engine block and not touching.

One way to find out if you misfire or cross-firing, try starting the vehicle at night no lights. You might want to use a tarp to cover the open hood and around the front of the engine and see if you find some arcing or cross-firing.

The ignition coil themselves might have a crack around it and allows to leak out the high energy voltage from the ignition coil.
