Okay, this engine has about 1 week before I go at it with a very large hammer. I took a 350 out of a 1974 Camaro and dropped it into my 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix. Ever since then, the engine runs like crap at an idle and often just shuts off, espicially when going from neutral or park to drive and reverse. It runs okay at higher rpms. I put the timing light on it and according to it, spark to #1 cyclinder is occuring about 50 degrees after TDC, when it should be around 4 degrees before. Everything points to timing, but I just cannot figure this thing out.
The heads have been machined, the crank is fine, there is a new camshaft, timing chain and gears, new lifters and rods, and I have tried different intake manifolds, and distributors but the ^&*#ing thing will not run right.

Re: 1974 350 Chevy small block
If you unplug the vaccum advance and block it at the carb at reset timing to 10 to 12 degrees before TDC at 600-800rpm idle in park it should run better.

Yep, I tried that, and I have become fed up with the engine so it iscoming out and I am working on adding a 5.7 liter GM 350 fuel injected engine. Its quite the project but it will be worth it.
