Shock installation problems

I have a 96 Rodeo 3.2L V6 4X4. I just purchased the Pro Comp ES 9000 shocks from Summit Racing (They had a great deal: buy 3 and get the 4th free). However, while trying to put them on I ran into a problem. The bottom bushing on the Pro Comp shock is too wide to slide into the bracket on the truck. I've only tried installing the front shocks so far. I called the Pro Comp tech line and they said that it would be fine to cut the bushing and metal sleeve to fit the truck's bracket. Has anybody else ran into this problem? If so, what was your solution? I guess I'm just a little worried about destroying 4 brand new shocks before I even get them on the truck.

Also, I bought the shock boots. Do I really need to use them or were they just a waste of money? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
