88 Camry tail lights dim

A passerby pointed out that my tail lights were out. On quick inspection I see that the tail lights are indeed on, but dim. When the brake pedal is depressed, however, all the lights go out.

I have replaced tail and stop light fuses to no avail. Where should I look first for the short?

You may have put the wrong light bulbs in the wrong places. check the socket and compare to the bulb base.

This happened to my aunt's '90. It looked really funny.

It's one of those things that just happens. Don't feel too bad about it, just get it right before a cop pulls you over like the one that pulled over my aunt!

She won't be cahnging any more lights by herself....

Two other things to look at are the grounds to these lights and also the wiring harness at the trunk hinge.
