Looking to buy a dsm?

Ok guys,
I have come to the other side I currently own a 1978 Big block pontiac trans am rebuilt the engine myself and after 2 yrs I'm going to college now so i gotta get rid of it, it runs on race fuel only, 10:1 compression big ass vavles on some big ass heads.
Anyways i'm looking to sell it and with the money i wanna buy an eclipse gsx 2g, I will very slowly but surely modd it but my question is, Will i get okay gas mileage while stock and how do these cars handle, And most importantly what right off the bat, on this car will give me problems what on these cars seem to go wrong on just about all the other dsms other than the obvious.

My father sells used cars so i will go to dallas dealer auctions and pick one up if one shows up during the week were there if not we have guys there that will bid for us but i used to see them for 4000 about 3 yrs ago. I plan to sell my trans am for 6500 plus.

I could really use some input from the dsm OG's
Thank U

Re: Looking to buy a dsm?

In another thread today 95 GSXracer said that he gets 22+mpg on his Eclipse, which happens to run about 430whp on pump gas. If I could get off the accelerator for a second, I might see better results than my ~20mpg.

There are quite a few autox DSM's, so I assume they do quite well, even stock. I haven't pushed mine to the limits on the street so I couldn't tell you first hand. It doesn't handle badly like I suspect some older muscle cars do.

On 7 bolt motors (all 2g's) there is a 0.5% chance of crankwalk, which also happens to several other cars (supra) that people seem to point out about DSMs. Otherwise, there aren't any DSM specific problems until you modify the car. After that, anything can happen like any other car.

Thanx

I'll Check out that guide in faq

Wow thanx guys for replying so quickly with nice info I never got this much so fast anywhere else. Just wanna say i really appreciate what you guys are doing here been looking through the threads and wow u guys are on the ball.

20mpg sounds good compared to my 10mpg city 15mpg highway Hog
750 double pumper holley street dominator.

Taking corners at a good speed wow i cant wait i almost always used to spin my wheels and fish tail without even wanting too until i got used to it.

Thanx again and what would u recommend i get off the bat when i get the car i plan on rebuilding it with an engine performance kit, how much different will this be than rebuilding a big block pontiac motor.

the big difference that stands out in my mind is that of the computerisation, the computer is alot more advanced and needs to know everthing u do to your car,and another is stuff like sensors ,the crankshaft sensor, cam sensor ,and the MAF sensor, once u get past the technoligy its basically the same, just rember ,,,turbo=low compression
