hey everyone...i wanted to ask a question...i currently have a 2001 Celica...but i wanted a RHD 86' Corolla Hatch since forever...i was thinking since i know some people in japan they could send me one from there, like a used one in good condition...hopefully 5 speed...any engine cuz i'll probably change it...but i wanted to know what you all thought on how these cars run...i've seen it on inital-d of course, and i've driven one once, but whats it like as a daily driver?..do you get the respect you want from it?..or is it only good as a straight track car?..

its slow compered to the modern cars. why would you prefer a rhd corolla? you know ae86 are getting scarce, even in japan. the 86 would work well on the race track than in a drag strip imho.

you say any engine cuz u';ll prolly change it....obviously you have no clue wut you are talking about let alone u want to import a RHD vehicle.

If you do import an AE86 an it's a GTS it will come equiped with the 4AGE 16v twin cam motor.Strong motor from the factory and it loves to rev high. There is also the GTV which alot of poeple forget about which came with the 20v motor. Both come with lsd stock and a pretty strong tranny.

You say it would be good a track but not drag, i beg to differ. Being that the HAchi is light to begin with,it is a good car for drag.I'm not tlaking about 9 sec. cars her but something that is still respectable.

I have seen many people throw on turbochargers an run very respectable 13's in there Hachi's.

I'm even working on a project car right now with a buddy to swap in the 4AGZE motor in a hachi we got. If you don't know what the motor is, it is a supercharged version of the gts motor that can be found in 1st generation MR2's.

An ae86 never came with a 20 valve, an ae101 that is fwd did, yes you can swap it in but it is a bitch. If you could get an ae86 shiped to the us you would never get it through customs unless you remove the motor,trany,wheels,and doors then it is considered a parts car. Next you could never get the car registered because you dont have the title and jap. spec. cars dont have u.s. spec. vin tags on the dash.

It is very possible to get a car imported here legally and registered. Now, i'm not saying it's easy but very possible. There is a Honda Fit over where i live and it was imported recently and is legaly registered. He waited 3 months for it to be legalized but it was done and now has the dmv papers to prove it.

my friend had a r33 skyline imported through one of our friends in japan and it cost him $18,000 dollars just to legalize it, thats not including what it cost him to buy the car or ship it. im talking just the cost of legalization!! $18 grand!!!

The 4AGZE is a good transplant to work with, but changing to a different engine in a AE86 isn't a bad idea either; especially when you consider the choices you have:

3TC Engine

Although an older engine, consider the fact that almost every drag AE86 from Rafael Roldan (Felo Racing) to Brendan Alvarez (PSI Racing) runs a turbocharged 3TC at 8 secs or lower.

About a year and a half ago, PSI built a street TE72 Corolla running 11's with a 3TC engine, for street. Put that engine in a more lighter and aerodynamic AE86 body, and I'm running 10's...

I ran a turbocharged 3TC with a Mitsu TD06-20G in my 82 TE72 wagon before I broke my T50 tranny. Now I'm back to the drawing board to build a better drivetrain.

If you see a 3TC as too old of an engine for your investment, then you also have:

3S-GTE Engine

Hook this up with a W57 or W58 tranny, and everyone behind you is nothing but past tense. Plus with aftermarket support from places like HKS and Greddy (Trust), you won't be reinventing the wheel...

There's been a few guys who even dropped a 2JZ-GTE in their AE86.

Anything can be done, it just depends on what you want to do and what you can budget for....

I agree with Toyrolla. The ae86 being a lightweight offer great potential and already being rwd saves some convertion time and add some fun factor ^^
