1979 Chevy 350 HEI 4brl

i have a 350 just rebuilt it started about 4 time but my idiot ex mechanic kept reving it up so i got rid of him, now the truck wont start just cracks, i replaced the ignition module and the rotor and cap look fine, i switched the coil with another from a swap meet, and still no spark, on the coil wires there is a place for what looks like a wire from the battery it say "bat" next to "tach" but when the truck was started nothing was connected to the lead. do i connect it to the ignition switch on the on position or what do i do?
