LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

I met up with a shop today and he quoted me $2900 for a LS motor swap for my 1990 CRX Si. Here's the spec on the motor and the deal...

Complete LS motor/tranny <100k miles (probably around 98k) - $1200
New Axles - $350
Hasport Mounts - $350
New Clutch - $200
New Timing Belt - $100
Labor - $700

He also said that he'll fabricate a shift linkage for less than buying a new one.

So the question is, is this a good price? Another question is, is there anything else I should be replacing before the motor is installed (i.e. water pump, etc.)? I want this done right so that I won't have to pay for extra labor later.

After this, then I'm going to bring it to a ref and get it bar'd. Then I'll plan on modifications once all that is done. So thanks in advance for the help and advise.

Ben

Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

I'd say do the water pump - it should be more than $40 more - they're cheap. Other than that it's a pretty good price. Most places around here charge around $3400 or so.

That seems like a LOT of money, but thats probably because it is.

Anyway, don't use the LS tranny.

hey SiZ, i have a ?

just out of curiousity i have to ask. we have the 93 AT ls integra. was thinking about maybe slapping a b16 head on. but it gets tricky with the AT. i found a fairly cheap b16a2 AT ecu...could that be used with the LS tranny?

i would tell him that you will do it for 2900 if he rebuilds it first, cuase my friend in his 89 crx si(B18a1) we had his swap done with the engine rebuilt new mounts, new water pump, fabricated shift linkage, new timing belt, axles, and all the little odds and ends, and ended up paying about 2600 all together, ( of course we did a lot of the labor our selves, and the person who was doin it was a good friend of ours).

Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

LS tranny will slow you down a lot.

J1 is a little overdoing it (You'll be revving at 5,000rpm on the highway, wich is fine for the B16A), and I've never heard of a B1.

Y1 or YS1 would be ideal.

Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

Y1/YS1...got it...I'll be putting that on my wish list...along with other upgrades...

So I went over there and gave money so that he can order the mount and the axle...next, I will go and give him money for the motor tomorrow...everything should be in by Tuesday next week and I should be driving home the CRX by Wednesday. Man I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas to come around...very excited...can't wait...

Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

Ok, here's a question about this....

I went to drop off the car yesterday and he shows me the motor to be installed. So I'm all happy and can't wait to pick it up today. While we were talking, he mentions that it's off of a 89 Integ. I thought it was coming from a 90-91 Integ. Being a newbie, I didn't think nothing of it at the time. Then I did some research and learned that the 89 Integ came with a D16A3. Now, I'm trippin out cause I was expecting a B18A1.

Is this still a good price and will I be happy with a D16A3 or should I raise hell about this? I need some quick opinions on this. Thanks!!!

Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

The 87-89 Teg motor won't even fit in your car.

Re: Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

raise some hell! if he promised you an engine, you are paying for that engine. you may be a "noob" as you called it, but you don't deserve to be treated that way. shops are supposed to educate, not rape!

Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

I'm definitely going to question it. But SiZ, if you say that it won't fit, then there's no way that I'll be driving that car home anytime soon. Unless it does fit but with a lot of work. I know he ordered the HASport mounts for the B-Series because that's what we had talked about and he ordered the mounts before the motor. So if he does get it in using the mounts, then it's possibly a B18A and he just said the wrong year. In either case, I'm definitely gonna bring it up when I talk to him later today. I may be a noob but I'm not stupid. Thanks.

Re: LS Motor Swap...need your opinions...

If its the 87-89 teg motor he'd have to make mounts to make it fit, or modify the ones that are in there. I wouldn't pay for that motor though..

Let us know what happens.
