Installing Head Unit in 92 Mustang

I'm trying to install a JVC head unit into a 92 Mustang GT. I was told by quite a few people that I would need a special (perhaps even $50) adapter in order to do such a thing. Well, I went ahead and tried it without any such adapter and here I am. I got a wiring harness of course and connected all the wires for both power and speakers, all the wires are connected 100% right, but there's no sound at all coming out of the speakers. The unit turns on and does everyyhing else it's supposed to, it's only the speakers that won't work. No radio, no cd, nothing. I was told I needed that adapter for the electrical system, so it seems highly unlikely that it would be the problem, though here I am asking questions. But if anyone can shed some light on what the problem might be, I'd really appreciate it.

Getting the HU Out

Go to autozone or maybe even Wal-Mart and you can get these two tools shaped like U's. They go into the 4 holes in the front of the HU. I tried using a hanger and that didn't work, so I'd suggest getting the tool.

Re: Installing Head Unit in 92 Mustang

I think it was maybe $5 for the 2 of them.

Would anyone happen to know the name of the adapter I may or may not need to install this HU? SIKCRX, you said to check out crutchfield.com for the adapter, I can't seem to find anything that would be it. Do you know what the name of the adapter is? Anyone else know for that matter?

Re: Installing Head Unit in 92 Mustang

i know in their catalog is says they have adaptors for most cars, if you buy a headunit from them they send you the wiring kit for free. but my guess is you already have a headunit.

i think i read somewhere that they sell them for $5-$25. their phone number is 1-800-955-3000 if i was you i would give them a call.

Re: Installing Head Unit in 92 Mustang

dude go to pepboys or circuit city they have them there, and its not a 5watt amp, its a amp that ADDS 5watts over the base system, still just makes the stock speakers sound under powered IMO but you dont need to replace it you will notice crisper sound anyway, but if you do odds are you will blow the stock speakers in about 2mo

Re: Installing Head Unit in 92 Mustang

I went to autozone and got a wiring harness. There's another adapter I was told about that's made for the Mustang. Supposedly the Mustang's electrical system is weird, so it needs another adapter besides the harness. Also, I don't know what can be done about this, but it seems the ground wire for the speakers has a negative charge. The speakers are positive, how does that affect the playback and what can be done to change it?

Re: Installing Head Unit in 92 Mustang

If your Car is equipped with a factory premium sound, your Speakers will not sound with an after-market Head Unit. Unfortunately, they don't sell any adapter to by pass them. The only thing to do, is to run new Wires from the new Head Unit to the rear Speakers; and the ones on the Doors. It is alot of work, but, it is the only thing to do. And, if you don't know how to do it, it may be expensive to have it done.
