problems with timing belt

my timing belt has slipped time twice, is there a stronger belt or a modification that will help me to avoid this? also rumor is you drop a belt you crush your valves, how true is this?

i believe the timing belt, does as it says, it makes the valves open at the correct time, but if it slips off, the valves wont open/'open at correct time' causing problems, which can lead to ALOT of engine damage.

If your belt is ok, check the tensioner. they loose most tension over time

You don't mention what year Talon you have. I'm very familiar with the tensioner and belt arrangement used on the 90-94 model years, but I can't comment on 95 and up because they may be a bit different.

I can tell you that I have never had a problem with my belt jumping in 214,000 miles of driving, as a result of the tensioner. My first belt did jump time, but it was because several cogs tore off of the belt.

I've given some advice and tips on changing the timing belt in previous posts, and the one thing I have mentioned more than once is that you need to spend the time to properly adjust the tensioner. It is probably the most critical part of doing the job correctly, other than actually lining up all of the timing marks properly.

What year do you have? Did you do the belt change yourself?

This may be a little off topic, but I need to change my timing belt soon. Could any of you guys give me an estimate of how much it would cost to have my timing belt changed by a mechanic?
