Angry replace oil pump

Hey, all-

I've got an '88 Grand Prix with a bad oil pump. I got a new pump to put in and all that, but i cannot get the oil pan off. I had to take off the starter to get some of the oil pan bolts out, and now i have succeeded in removing all the bolts from the oil pan. But the problem is, on the passenger side, the oil pan sits snug against part of the frame to the car, and will not budge. Anyone got any ideas as to how the heck to get that oil pan to drop off so i can replace the pump???

Re: replace oil pump

You could use a rubber mallet small enough to hit the pan on the side and unstuck it from the frame? Silly but sometimes elementary hammering procedures could work.

Re: replace oil pump

The pan is more narrow along the bottom, and bigger around the top, where it bolts to the block. The pan is too tight against the tranny and frame to drop out. nothing i try works. My neighbor has worked for GM for 20+ years, and he came by to look at it. he said pull the engine, it's the only way. i've tried everything else. i've unolted the front of the engine, and jacked it up to gain a few inches, but it's still not enough room. Sure, pulling the engine would work, but that's alot of work just to drop the pan. does anyone have any other ideas????

If I recall right, you lower the frame down some to get it out. I've never tried it, just read about how to do it on the autozone.com site. Just go there and enter the info for your car and then they should have a free repair manual for that car online.

Re: replace oil pump

Well, i got the damn thing off. I had to loosen the motor mounts on the other side of the engine, then i had two floor jacks, one on the drivers side, and one one the passenger side of the engine, and jacked it up. for the most part, i was pretty much pulling the engine. But it fell right off. I replaced the pump, and put her all back together. Thanks everyone for your input on the situation.
