Supercharger Problems on 1994 SSEI

The supercharger is making a rattling noise at idle. Supercharger fluid level is fine and the Turbo indication indicates good boost on acceleration. The vehicle has 129900 miles on it and as far as I know the supercharger fluid has never been changed. Is there a drain port or does it have to syphoned out? Appreciate any help. Thanks

Re: Supercharger Problems on 1994 SSEI

I had a God-awful rattling in my car when I first got it. as time went on i was able to replace things.

1. Crank pulley&balancer (it is one part, the balancer is incorportaed into the pulley. $250 just for the part. passenger wheel has to come off and much work done to replace it)

2. idler pulley (i think mine was the inside one on the supercharger belt, but yours could be either, or even another pulley.)

as i said in my other post, even if you have someone else change your supercharger oil, youre only looking at maybe $30-$40. seems a small price to pay on something that would cost A LOT of money to fix if it broke.

First off, if you do try to run w/o the belt(s) to check for noise, don't run it long b/c those belts run the water pump etc.

Second, the drain plug is over by the snout of the SC and it is removed using an allen wrench. It has to be sucked out. I used a syringe that has a plastic tip that can be stuck down into the hole to suck it out. Something like a childs medicine dropper would work. It'll just take some time to get it all out.

Here is 2 other things to check:
1)remove the belt on the supercharger pulley and see if the pulley has any backlash. Basically, can you feel any slop in it. You'll be able to spin the supercharger, but spin it back and fourth and is there slop when you change directions before the gears engage. If so, this would indicate a worn supercharge coupler. The part is cheap, but requires removal of the supercharger and replacement of the coupler.

2)Remove the right wheel and look at the bottom pulley (harmonic balancer). This is what drives the rest of the pulley's and it attached to the crankshaft. Do you see any separation of the outer metal ring of the pulley from the inner rubber part?

#1 above would typically be heard only at idle while #2 would be while driving and under acceleration as well. (I'm in the middle of replacing BOTH on my car :-) )

I also have a slight rattling when the car is in drive and not moving. I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of super charger I would have in my bonny. Would it be a Powerdyne or vortech??
