i am retarded

guys, anyone who buys a third gen, and is getting bad gas mileage, poor idle, stumbling off idle, an apparent misfire, but you shouldnt have one, i think i know your problem. streched timing gear. i did everything to this car, induction service, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, set the timing to 0 degrees (after disconecting the timingconnector) and it still ran like shit, thought that i might have blown piston rings, or a burned up valve, definately sounded like a dead cylender, but on a whim i decided to try again on the timing and set it by ear, well, i wound up advancing the rotor almost a full eigth of a turn before it started sounding about right, then drove it, and wow, it actually runs like a car should, no shaking, no misfiring, no chugging at low engine speeds. smooth power, only thing i can think of is that in typical fasion of this poor car, the timing chain has 150,000 miles on it, and is streched out, so the cam isnt where the timing mark says it is. advanced it, and its running like a champ just thought id pass this along for anyone who gets into the same situation.

Try having a car with a nylon timing gear You know for as much engineering and money that went into the turbo v-6
GM could of put a metal timing gear on it.

*bows* to the lovely GM engineering team

Re: i am retarded

the way you guys are talking about the 3rd gen, it sounds like it isnt a good car. i am thinking about getting one in the next few weeks, is it a good car to have or does it have alot of little manufacturer problems like the timing?

Re: i am retarded

oh yeah totally. dude, i LOVE both my babies. the reason i bring up so many problems with the IROC is because i bought her from some shade tree mechanics in arkansas, who didnt know their sisters tit from a lugnut. the fact that this engine has never had any regular maintaneince is not the cars fault. 150,000 miles on an original timing chain, especialy one in a performance engine that has been rode hard and put away wet is alot. and they are known to stretch, i just never thought of it till now and thought i had more problems. but the engine is actually running very smooth and power is great. now that the timing is adjusted for the slack chain. once i put a new chain in it, im sure the timing mark will be spot on.
