HELP! What do i need for engine performance in a civic?

Hey, can anyone give me the rundown on engine tuning and upping for a 93 civic, standard 16V non tech? I saw my friend last year dump a crap load of money into his 96 civic and its not any noticably faster! What parts make the diff and dont coast thousands like engine swaps? I'm new to tunign engine performance, all i know is exterior stuff. If anyone could help me out here that would be great!

Re: HELP! What do i need for engine performance in a civic?

save and swap the engine especially if you need to loose some miles on your then thats a good reason to do a swap plus you'll gain alot of horses, then add ur common bolt on found in every mom and pops shop these days then throw on some boost
if you want power it will cost you

You asked so here you go, but if you want fast it's going to cost you money and time. Or just an enormous amount of money if you don't do it yourself.
This is the route I took but you can choose anyway you want. Just do research in each area. Left some comments on pretty much every item.

1. A built block. Mine was done through Earl Laskey.
a. CP pistons 75.5 is common. 77MM-78mm is custom and take a month lead time to get.
b. Pauter Rods
c. Sleeved Block... Benson is one of the best.
d. Micropolish and balance crank.
e. ACL bearings.
f. Oil and water pump *yours may still be good*
g. gasket set
2. Built Head.
a. I've had good luck with my Crower stage 2 turbo cam.
b. Crower HP springs
c. Crower Titanium retainers.
d. Port and polish job.
e. Ferrara Stainless steel valves.

3. Edelbrock Turbo Kit. (could go Greddy, Apexi can still find or homemade).
4. Edelbrock nitros kit. (Not needed but fun anyway)
5. Walboro 255lph fuel pump.
6. AEM High flow fuel rail.
7. AEM High flow fuel filter.
8. AEM High flow fuel pressure reg. (Helps bring rail PSI down after pump install.)
9. Apex i world sport cat back. (I'd probably do an N1 if I knew the turbo would quiet the car down so much to start with)
10. Test pipe for cat replacement.
11. NGK +2 colder plugs. (helps prevent detonation)
12. Powerstop slotted rotors (gotta stop)
13. AEM HP brake pads
14. JimFab Polyurethane motor mounts. (By by to wheel hop)
15. B&M Fuel Pressure guage
16. ACT 8.4lb flywheel (or 12lb streetlite) (Firdanza is also good).
17. Spec Stage 3, 6puck clutch Lightened (Just a clutch I like. I've heared good things about ACT clutchs)
18. B&M fuel pressure guage. (Helps to see what the fuel pressure looks like at the rail. Come in handy)
19. Unorthodox Crank pulley. (It's cool and helps with revs)
20. AEM Powersteering/altenator Pullies. (Probably not needed)
21. Skunk2 Cam Gear (Helps with some fine timing adjustments)
22. ARP HeadStuds (A must have if your going to be boosted)
23. Cometic MLS head gasket. (Stock should be fine also, this is just my preference)
24. Oil Pressure guage (no oil to motor=bad so why not.
25. A/F guage (like the AEM UEGO2 with display)
26. Apexi AVC-R Boost Controller (Best one around that I could see. I love mine.)
27. Fluidyn Radiator. (turbo likes to run a bit warmer)
28. Energy Polyurethane Shifter bushing/stabelizer. (stop grinding those gears so much, maybe).

Probably only upgrade to a Garrett GT28RS turbo later on and AEM-EMS 30-1020 with some 780 injectors.

Welp, think that just about covers it.

I would like pics of this setup. And you have a fully built motor with an Edelbrock turbo kit, probably boosting the hell out of it and you're choking exhaust flow with a damn Apex WS. Go get an N1, you'll definetely see some HP increase.

Re: HELP! What do i need for engine performance in a civic?

kinda wondering why you have all that and not a turbo timer. I guess if you plan on getting a new turbo it doesn't matter if you fuck up the one on there now by not letting it cool off and circulate all of the hot oil out of it.

You asked so you shall receive. Beware, here's a ton of pictures.

Built Block. Thanks to Earl Laskey at Laskey Racing. Great guy to do business with. He's straight up. He doesn't advertise services, only by word or mouth. Laskey Racing

Here's the car

Here's a shot of the motor bay. Little old but you can get the idea.

Front of car with the bumper off.

Built motor when I got it in.

Here's alittle what's inside. The block was notched for rod clearance. Hard to see in these pictures.

Here's the built head.

Don't leave home or get boosted without these.

Stuff

There's a ton more but I'm tired of typing
