Angry engine trouble

I just had my car shut down on me. I had something in the engine basically pop out or off. I drive a stck shift toyota tercel 1990. When the part came off the car started to vibrate and after I pulled over to check it out I noticed that the engine was smoking from the inside and there was motor oil leaking, not a lot of it. Before that my oil light kept coming on. I know that it either means too little or too much oil, but in this case it was too little. My car will come on if I hold the gas but can't get into gear. I would like to know if anyone knows how bad could the damage be( on a scale of not that bad to get another car)?

Sounds like the engine is Fubar... depending on the ammount of miles on the car and its condition you could swap in anouther used engine, or most likey get a new car because rebuliding the engine might cost more than the value of the car.

Thats about the worse situation.

If your lucky it might have been a head gasket, hopefully the engine wasen't run too long in that state.

Question found the problem

It appears that my pistons broke through the oil pan and my cousin says I need another engine. If I'm really lucky(really lucky) what do ya think the estimate would be with the engine and labor(including the possibility that we know some really great repair guys and can get an engine cheap)?

Re: engine trouble

If your pistons came through the oil pan, then you probably have quite a bit of damage inside the engine - crankshaft, main bearing journals etc. For as old as the car is, it is going to cost more to either replace the engine or to rebuild it than the vehicle is worth. If the car doesnt hold any sentimental value, I suggest you look into another vehicle.

If I remember correctly, in Japan they require a new engine every 50,000 miles? Doesn't make any sense to me, but if that's what they're doing I think you should go find someone who sells those used Japanese engines that only have 50,000 miles. We had one such business here in Reno, but he's now out of business.
