I seem to front-left CV joint crappin' out on me. I've found a complete half-shaft w/ CV joint at NAPA and would like to install it myself. Since I've never actually changed a CV joint yet, I was wondering if I could get some advice from anybody who has done this themselves. Thanks in advance.

I can't believe no one replied!
Well, all you need to know is in the FSM, and I have not changed CV joints yet. How did it go?

first off, front left, which side is that, driver or passenger? i'm guessing passenger (looking at the car from in front of the car?) but i'm not sure. First thing to remember is to drain the tranny fluid, when the half-shaft comes out, so does all teh tranny fluid :apuke: Other thing, it makes it quite a bit easier to get the halfshaft out of the hub if you undo the front suspension.

Well, A+ for effort there Justin, thanks. You'll have to excuse my being unclear about my previous post, sorry 'bout that. I meant to say that the CV joint on the front-driver's side seems to be goin' out. I've heard from some people that I need some sort of "fork" tool to get the job done? What if all I have is a "spork"? :sun: J/k

Umm.. driver's side... i think I ended up using a big ass pry bar, wedged it between the tranny and the halfshaft to pop it out of the tranny.... The other thing i know i've seen before is looping a rope around it (where it connects to the tranny) and just give it a good tug, and usually that works too. It just depends, i've seen some practically fall out, others really don't want to come out. Oh yeah, it helps if you put grease around teh ring/pin when putting the new halfshaft in, to help center the ring, makes it a lot easier... Good luck.
