ignition off, engine still runs

We have had our 1996 contour for 4 years now. Over the weekend we got home, turned the car off, took the key out of the ignition and the engine was still running. Everything else on the car turns off, but the engine stays on. What could the problem be?

i know you posted this over a year ago damn near two years ago but just incase anyone is looking up this... my contour did the same thing. it ended up doing something with the windsheild wiper circuit. others i have heard the taillight was out... and a very common one i hear is the ignition switch is bad

possible that the ignition timing is too far advanced or there may be excessive carbon on ur pistons....

btw, this could be caused by a remote starter. Not sure if you have one, but it has been the culprit for others. This has been discussed on contour.org (along with every other question on here).

the spark plugs have nothing to do with the engine still running they in no way produce their own spark. BTW this thread s a little old.
