Question Mods for My '96 A4

alright heres the deal, i just bought my dad's a4 from him and i want to do some mods. being that its a 96 the only option for an engine is the V6 12 valve 2.8 liter, i know there isn't a hole lot i can do with it. i dont want to do anything stupid to it like kids are doing to their little rice burners. im looking to do something that actually adds to the performance and is kinda i guess classly. i was thinking about a turbo or a subercharger, but seriously 5K is just too much for a car worth only twice that. so im left with what? intake? chips? exhaust? i dont really know. something to consider is that im still making payments on the car loan so the cheper route is the one for me. and im not looking to get the car to pump out 300 hp or anything ungodly like that, just something to get a little bit more punch to the car. i love driving it, but want just a little more out of it. anything you guys would suggest would be greatly appreicated.

mike

p.s. i guess the other two things to know would be that it is a quattro and a 5-speed manual if that makes a difference to suggestions

I have the exact same car. I have done 2 upgrades to my car, the usual. Cold air intake from lltek.com and an AP racing exhaust from ebay. i know the muffler dosent add hardly any hp but the intake i assume added about 10% indrease. and the whole system sounds good. I have been looking for other upgrades but they dont exist. I think i may look for an s4 engine swap. HELL YA!! Anyone let me know if that can be done.

hey thanks for the advice...ive found a good site that actually has stuff for my 2.8 12 valve engine... motodyne.com...i dont think im going to get anything for now...most things just arent worth the money for the little performance they provide...oh and ntmcog...a 10% increase in hp from a cold air induction seems a little high...i think thats how civic owners count their horsepower...but i did just call lltek and asked about the CAI kit for our engine...they said its about a 5 to 7 hp increase over stock...not that 17 you were hoping...sorry buddy...and most exhausts are about the same...though a new exhuast would flow more easily so there might be a noticable difference from the old exhaust...i just cant justify spending near a grand for 10 to 15 hp increase

..in reality, this is more like 1%.. figure a 120hp engine.. like 1.2hp..

which brings up the question...why in the world would i want to pay the 250 bucks and take the time to rip out my old air box for that small amount of gained performance...i might as well just add an octane boost to my tank after each fill up...anyway i dont see the point of the money or time to add so little performance...but i guess there is a market of people who would want to...but oh well...i think the point has been made

Re: Mods for My '96 A4

its more than 1.2 horsepower, and any little bit to help get the air into the engine or cool it off helps

Re: Mods for My '96 A4

Directly from the lltek website...
"Our Cold Air Intake systems are designed to deliver maximum air flow at maximum velocity to the throttle body. Tests have shown that up to a 10 horsepower increase can be achieved, depending on the vehicle application. In addition, our intake kits provide improved throttle response and torque."

Im not trying to stoke the fire but i think more than 1% increase comes with an induction kit.

maybe not i dont know.

it does thats what i said, plus he gave an example on a 120 hp engine, your engine has more than 120

youre right...the engine were talking about has 172 hp...and i did think the 1% was a little low just as 10% was a little high...but according to the salesperson at lltek.com the cold air kit only adds about 5 to 7 hp...maybe some other kits for other cars add up to 10 hp...but im telling you what the company told me...and just remember that when someone says "up to" that means the top possible hp...not always what the actual...i still think that unless i can get a good bang for my buck i dont want it...i mean in the low its 50 bucks per horse...but whatever...its just not what i want to spend my money on right now

Re: Mods for My '96 A4

well its one of the cheapest to spend it on, and any little bit that gets your car breathing easier and cooler is worth it.

Re: Mods for My '96 A4

....search around, its already been proven over and over that the stock audi airbox is more effecient than those aftermarket intakes... just look at where they draw the air from.. the only thing you're gonna get with it is the 'sound'...
