Ok, so I read the FAQ, so if I get redundant from that, Im sorry.
Gonna paint the plastic interior pieces of my 97 DX hatch. It's the all grey interior, Im gonna accent paint with a darker blue, like the dell computer blue. I plan on using the $0.99 rattle cans from walmart, I don't think there's gonna be that big a difference between that and Krylon in my experience of using spray paint for various applications. no matter, I use Black Magic silicone sealer for my interior (amorall sucks) and I plan to prep the pieces with warm soapy water, then wash with alcohol, then warm soapy water, 400 grit sand paper to roughen the surface to hold the paint better, wash soap and water again, then alcohol, then paint, till desired coat, 2 coates clear, let dry. re-install. am I missing anything? are there any tricks some of you may have done that arent on the FAQ that I might wanna use? any trouble your ran into that wasn't previously forseeable? just makin a last minute check list and lookin for previous experience. that's all, anything to offer is appreciated, if its in the FAQ - I got it. ps: any picks of the back seat/hatch area that arent littered with subs? Im still a little sketchy on what to do back there? could use some inspiration...thanks thanks as always -wheel

Your interior spray has Silicion. It can seep into the material and be hard to get all of it off. As I am sure you are aware, if you don't get it all off, your paint won't stick too long. You might want to buy a plastic prep from a paint store, Dupont makes a good plastic prep. This will remove wax, silicon, grease, Mold Release etc...or you can try and use Wax and grease remover. The plastic prep is actually made to clean plastic materials before painting, etc. Either of these should remove the Siliocon...I'd try the Dupont Plastic Prep. Warm Soapy water may not be enough to remove the Silicon, that stuff can be a pain in the rear to remove...wax and grease remover or dupont plastic prep (there are other brands too) should be the trick. A auto paint supply store should carry both of these, and theyu should make sure all the silicion is removed, which will help your paint stick better.

good lookin out, I figured the silicone would be a pain, hence the rigid washing regiment. what's the cost on that DuPont kit, if you happen to know off hand. I'm not goin cheap on this project, but money is a bit of an issue, I would like to be able to paint it all for $40 or less, which I think can be done given the nature of the materials, whatcha think?

you might want to wetsand with 1000-1500 grit in between paint coats if you are using the walmart rattle cans. i used the duplicolor cans from wallmart, and the wetsanding really helped. if the clear doesnt come out really smooth, 3m makes a good polishing compound you can get at pepboys. super shiny.

I've never had very good luck with wetsanding...somehow I always manage to f''' it up. Course, it was my first attempt with 600 grit on metal.
How long do you have to let the paint cure between coates if you're wet sanding? I would wait about 30-45 minutes between coates in 85 degree weather (not too humid) before wet sanding, with 600 g, and it would come out looking like poo and would ball the paint up. I followed all the directions to the T, but.... I would think that with very light multiple coates I could avoid wetsanding. That 3M polish compound sounds interesting however...got any results pics?

So that was the issue, the 600 grit....and guess what forum I got that grit number from....hmmmm....which one could it be.....
no matter, I think I'll just do the coates, and if im not happy, I'll wet sand after they've had some time to dry. I'll probably have to, with the cheapy rattle cans I plan on using the paint is likely to spit anyway resulting in the need to sand. we'll see, my girlfriend is gonna help me. she's an artist/photographer so it should come out ok, and of course, plenty of pics. \ WOW! think of that, the first step be step painting you interior thread! the memory on the server such a thread would save by making all those other How do I paint threads obsolete! wow.

what good is wet sanding between every single coat gonna do anyway? wouldn't it be a better thing to do once half way through then again at the end to prevent orange peel and bumps? with very light coats, I would think that between coats wouldnt be necessary.
?

thought crossed my mind today during my 4th period class, yes even teachers aren't always paying attention to what's being taught,
should I use a little of that 600 grit sand paper of mine on the plastic before I paint. I fully plan on using the DuPont plastic prep (thanks eckoman, always good lookin out), but I wonder if a lil roughness on the plastic might help. sorry for all the questions, but I planned for this weekend, and it is quickly approaching. thanks always. -wheel

are you gonna primer it at all?
if you primer it, use some 300 before. but you sand primer with about 600 before painting, so i guess that would be ok. |

naw, I probably wont primer, the interior is in REALLY good condition for as old a the car is with 100K+ miles on it...its quite astounding really.
I may se primer on the kick plate, or center console, but for the door panaels and dash panels and vents, I don't think it's necessary. If I prep that plastic correctly, and paint correctly, I shouldn't need primer.
