replacing fuel pump

right now my husband is replacing the fuel filter. My car 92 3.1 v6 won't start so he is doing the filter first, if it still wont start he is planning to replace the fuel pump. My question is how do we get the gas out? syphoning won't work. is there a way to get it out? I (of course) have at least a half a tank. couldn't happen when its on E!
all help is appreciated

Re: replacing fuel pump

Unless you have a faily large amount of gas in the tank, I wouldnt worry about emptying it. Me and my bro changed a pump on a 93 3.1 that still had about 1/4 tank of gas.

2 strong men can easily lower the tank with gas in it. See if he can find a friend to help him. Use a jack to get it back in place when replaceing the tank so that you dont have to hold it....

Other than that, I have no idea on how to drain it

Re: replacing fuel pump

There is another way. Under the rear seat right side there are the fuel pump wires, tap into them, unhook the battery, disconnect the supply fuel line and place end in container, at the same time connect the wires to a car battery at rear right where you spliced the wires this will activate pump. This is a 2 person job but works well. A little off the wall but works, good luck.

Re: replacing fuel pump

Just to let you know, 1 man,1 woman and a floor jack can get the half full tank off. It took only 5 hours to remove tank, go to parts store 2 times, rebuild pump, and put it back on. Problem fixed! Car started! by the way, we drained it once we got it off. Thanks for the advise!
