If the heads are bad see if he'll replace them with the good heads. As far as what you'll need, I'd take it all. I'm sure the bell houseing will match up. You shouldn't have to use the wiring harness since you are staying with the carb, and I don't believe you can use the distributor but I could be wrong.

Re: 96-99 Gmc 350 for third gen?? #906
what are the major differnces in the two casting 906 and 062 just the hardened exhaust seat?

Re: 96-99 Gmc 350 for third gen??
ok the heads are cause for concern, even if they are ok, hit em with a hammer till it cracks and get a set of 062's. the 906 and 062 are different exhaust seats, that cant be ported, but also the 906 have different exhaust ports that dont flow as well, which does a shitty job of evacuating the cylnder on the exhaust stroke. if you are stuck with the 906 castings, get a set of manley street flow valves, that have undercut stems near the valve face, which they claim can increase flow by up to 40%, which would help the heads, they do have the LT1 170cc intake port, so you can still get decent performance from them, so if youre just lookin for a mild street 350, makin around 350hp, they will work, but if you ever wanna go more, youre gonna need to upgrade them to at least the 062 castings.
as far as what youll need. if your gonna keep the carburated setup, then all you need is the block, and the rotating assembly inside it, and the heads. perhaps the oil pan, but you might need the oil pan from the original engine to clear the front crossmember. leave everything else behind. just buy the new TBI/Vortec intake, and bolt it all together. its a no brainer. might i suggest that you tear down and rebuild the 350 with new bearings and piston rings however, just what i would do with a junkyard engine. the stock pisonts are also pretty shitty, so while you got it appart, i might also sugget a new set of forged aftermarket slugs. set up for the propor compression for street engines.

well ive looked for a while around here and the best price ive goten was 325 with the distributor ,heads , short block and if a head is bad he'll replace it
oh and i go there tomorrow to put some money down on it im gunna start pullin vavle covers to the other vortecs he has and try to find some 062's ill only keep the 906's if i have no other choice i know he has one that came out of a tahoe but it looked burnt pretty bad so im not sure about that one but ill look if i have to keep the 906's what would be teh best setup? 2.02in/1.6ex vavles? springs ? |

Re: 96-99 Gmc 350 for third gen??
well if you run the 906 heads, you have to keep the 1.5in exhaust valve, as far as the intake i would think you can machine it out to 2.02 but you might over stuff the cylender with that limited exhaust valve, at the very best youd have to run a dual pattern camshaft favoring the exhaust side. or run the standard valve on the intake, and use the street flow valve on the exhaust to try and even them out a bit. for springs it depends on what kinda lift your looking at, but comp cams makes a behive spring that i recomend for street engines running vortec heads. but id run it past their cam help line to see if those springs will work with the cam you pick. but if you wind up wanting to run regular springs youll have to machine the spring seat, cut down the valve guide to make it both shorter and smaller in outside diameter to clear dual spring setups. and allow more lift.

Re: 96-99 Gmc 350 for third gen??
i would start with 99 chevy tahoes, suburbans, silverados, and GMC equivilants, and go backwards till 96. newer the better. less wear and tare and any unlisted improovmants they might have made. my 062 castings came off a 99 chevy tahoe. avoid box vans and other G vans as they usually have the 906 castings.
