late model SS
I'm in the hunt for a late model camaro SS at the right price. I'm new to the whole chevy thing and need to ask what good options I should look for and at what price. If it ain't good, then I'm gonna buy a Supra TT.

Yup, ALL late model SS Camaros came with either T-tops or they are convertables. Plus make sure you read the SLP stickers on the door sills to know exactly what options are on the car. As far as what options to get, you HAVE to get an SS with the SLP exhaust option. That out of the way, some had a Husrt short throw shifter option. Mine doesn't and I can live with that for a while because the stock shifter really isn't that bad but I think I'm going to get a short throw eventually. One of the biggest options avail. is the 1LE suspension. It comes with Bilstien shocks and an ass load of suspension upgrades. As far as price, mine had 37k miles on it when I bought it and I paid $22,000 for it. Stick with the Chevy thing, you won't be disappointed.

Re: late model SS
There were hardtop SS's..... 1LE can be had on Z28's and SS's and is a hard to find option. 1LE cars were all hardtops, and the suspension is not really worth it if you are planning on changing everything out. IMHO, if you are buying the car to mod it, get a Regular SS for cheap with the Creature comforts you want (leather/cloth, t tops/HT/vert, 6 speed/auto, etc). If you can get one with the Level II suspension (Bilstiens) that would be great. It was an SLP option only on SS's. Then you can change out the PHB and LCA's, but have good springs and Shocks already. to know what SLP options it has, there is a sticker on the door from SLP that has any extras that were ordered with the car.

Re: late model SS
I was just saying that i wouldn't buy it if it didn't have t-tops. I know that there are some without. I just prefer the t-tops cause the are cool.

Re: late model SS
Thanks for the ideas, guys. See there's a guy who lives next door to me with a black SS and he doesn't drive it. I seriously havn't seen it move in months. It looks to be maybe an '01 or so, but has single exhaust, and is completely stock. Does the single exhaust mean anything?? Also, it doesn't have t-tops, but the car looks really new. I've only seen it leave our complex once, but damn it hauls ass. I didn't know about the SLP thing either, so I'll keep that in mind too. I really want an SS because I need something to beat my bud's saleen s281sc which has basic bolt-ons. Thanks.

Re: late model SS
SS and a Z28 is basically the same thing Power-wise, so if you are only looking to beat the saleen you can get the Z and spend the money you saved over an SS on mods to obliterate it... LOL. However, the main reason to get the SS is for the 'status' symbol it carries over the late model Z's. I have never seen a single exhaust on a late model SS unless it is aftermarket (I have a single on my Z). It is impossible to tell the difference between a 1998-1999-2000-2001-2002 F body except for wheels/badging, but they are all the same anyway. Good luck!

if it has single exhaust and has z28 or ss badges on it, its
probally a fake. a clone is sharp, but it MUST have the motor to back up the goods. |

Re: late model SS
i recently picked up a 2001 rear bumper at a
salvage lot, its the ss bumper with the center exhaust tip cut outs, got the bumper exhaust, tailights and rear spolier for 250.00. cant beat that. i have a 2000 model silver ss camaro, it will be a great upgrade for the car. |

Tacoma, some people run a single exhaust to scrap the Crossflow. I run a single out Spin tech Muffler on my Z. Lots of people run a Mufflex single out system (4") or a flowmaster single out system (3") on the 4th gen camaros. Just because it has a single tailpipe does not mean it is missing cylinders.... LOL.
You picked up a CME for $250? it is the one with the 2 large center tips and the facsia right? hold on to it, they are hard to get!

Re: late model SS
The single exhaust pipe on the left was an SLP intalled system. It was the cheaper standard exhaust unless you ordered the dual exhaust. So chances are a car with the single exhaust on the left was a low optioned SS car. You have to watch out on the 98 and up SS cars because not all of them had the SLP door stickers. See the 96 and 97 SS cars were converted by SLP only therefor all 96 and 97 SS's had door stickers, one on the drivers and one on the passenger side.
GM started to help on the conversion process on the 98-02 cars that's why some don't have the door stickers... The best way to find out if the car is a real SS is to call SLP, becasue they have a record of every SS car made by the VIN #. The white 98 SS conv. in the picture below has the single exhaust on the left.
