Hello,
I am new to this forum. I have a 96 I30t 5sp. It has a slight hestitation (jerking) when slowly accelerating under moderate load. The hesitation is not noticeable under heavy acceleration. I recently had a tune-up and have run a couple of bottles of fuel injector cleaner through the system. The engine light is not on.
My guesses are
EGR
Clutch (124k mi)
O2 sensor(s)

Looking for ideas, shortcuts, simple tests to narrow done the field.

I have the same car, and i think im feeling the same symtoms as you are. My cluth also has 127k on it, but it does not slip under WOT, so im thinking that cannot be it. The O2 sensor is where im leaning, but i had the check engine light come on at 118500, and figured maybe the malfuntion was simply the result of the O2 sensor overcorrecting since the plugs were never changed. Well i changed them, had the error codes cleared, and it had not come on since. Wether or not my theary is correct, in that if it were still an issue the check engine light would or should come back on, im not really 100 % sure. However, my gas mileage is just as good as it was when i first got the car. I also put bottled injector cleaner in every 8 to 10k. Ill let you know if i disover anything. Oh and im sure you check something as simple as your air filter, but as i wrote this im thinking i need to changed my fuel filter. After all that can definitely make a car hesitate.

I'm driving a 98 I30 and have noticed the same problem. I just recently changed my plugs thinking that was the problem (car had 128k miles and plugs were never changed). But alas, it didn't correct the problem. I also changed my air filter at the same time, so that couldn't be it either. I figured if the O2 sensor wasn't working correctly the check engine light would be on. So I was thinking it was something more like the EGR valve or fuel filter. I'm probably going to go ahead and change my fuel filter next to see if that helps... as it probably hasn't been changed and I figure it wouldn't hurt to have a new one put in now... I bought the EGR valve, but couldn't get the old one off easily, so I just forgot about it. Maybe I'll try again if the fuel filter doesn't correct it.

My O2 and knock sensor are supposabley bad now, after 13K miles since the check engine last showed those same trouble codes. Im thinking it is the O2 since i still feel some hesitation under parth throttle. Knock im not so sure about. Im wondering if running 89 had anything to do with it. You cant always hear the detonation, but it may be present. Maybe the ECU cant adjust the timing enough, and the sensor is sending a voltage level to the ecu that correspnds to a bad part?? Ahh well, ill do the o2 now, it probably recommended by now. 133Kmiles

Did you change your O2 sensor? Any improvement to the hesitation at part load? I don't want to have to change it if I don't need to.
