740 Transmission Noise
LOUD "Scraping" sound from Trans bottom.....Follows engine RPM's. Disappears at 2200 RPM. Engine idles very poorly. 'Bigmike60' said maybe a Filter between Engine and Trans is clogged.
Where is this Filter? What does it connect? Any ideas? |

Yikes! Doesn't sound good.
Best bet is to contact Kirt Koeller....a professsional rebuilder of the ZF transmissions we have in these cars. Give him a call. I've never spoken to him but others say he's very nice and super helpful. Kirt Koeller’s contact info: Autosports Unlimited Ask for Kirt Koeller (800)624-3876 ext 5735 or direct at (616)748-5735 |

Yeah, I guess it could be from the engine as well. Maybe the flywheel is damaged or the starter is hanging. Be sure it's not something more forward like the fan or alternator, a/c compressor, or the power steering pump. This is probably the first place you looked buy the source of sounds can be confusing, to me at least.
The smoke at startup probably means a little oil is leaking into the combustion chamber and getting burnt off at startup. By itself it's probably not that big of deal. I mean, you can buy a lot of oil for the price of tearing the engine apart to fix the leak. Just keep a close eye on the oil level and use one of those max-life oils to minimize the problem. As with the smoke, the rough idle may or may not be related to the loud scrapping sounds as there are many things that cause a rought idle. Probably you should seek professional help and that's not me. I'm just a guy with a good repair manual and curiosity about how things work. Good luck and please report back what you found. |
