Thinking about getting a 240SX fastback
On the 7th of this month my 88 Celica GTS caught fire and was totaled. I'm looking into getting a 240SX Fastback. I deliver pizzas 6 to 8 hours a day and I'm wondering if the 240SX can handle well. From what I read in magazines they say it handles pretty good but I have a hard time believing any magazines these day. I would like the opinions of owners on turning characteristics, braking, weight distribution, and acceleration. My last serious road car was my 90 Grand Am with a QUAD4 under the hood with CAI, ported head, custom exhaust. I loved the way the FE3 suspension with it +30mm swaybars handle the turns. Will the 93 240SX come close to the 90 G/A because the 88 GTS was severely lacking in the handling department?
The dealership wants 2400 for it. Is that a good deal for a 240SX? |

Well if the magazines say they handle well, then they must.
I can tell you that they can't stop for shit though. I almost ran my coupe into the back of my girlfriends Integra the day I got it because she had to stop suddenly on the freeway. I slammed on the brakes and instinctivley downshifted to second...I decided to not ever get close to the back of anyone in that car ever again. Glad I learned the hard way early on. And 2400$ for a fastback...who knows if it's a good deal or not. What year, condition, mileage?

Re: Thinking about getting a 240SX fastback
1993 240SX in good condition with 94,000 miles. Kelly blue book quoted Retail at 4200 for it and NADA quoted 3400. Tomorrow I'm going to take it for a test drive (Insert Evin Grin Here) then to a shop to get it checked out

5spd or auto? Make sure you check how -good- the condition is. People been gettin fucked around lately on purchasing 240s... but then again, someone finds a great deal every now and then. $2400 seems reasonable currently, not terribly overpriced, maybe 2k would be better. People who tell you otherwise should be realistic and note that prices are going up because of the demand for this car. Any mods done to the car? Stock, the handling is decent, but with so many aftermarket suspension parts, your wallet is the limit. Does the model come with sunroof, spoiler, rear wiper, abs, hicas, etc...? Have the frame and the underbody checked as well... haha

I would consider the 240sx to have excelent handling considering similarly priced cars, I've never had a problem with the breaks, mine stops on a dime. Downshifting while trying to stop fast on the freeway is almost always a bad idea though, all it's gonna do is break the tires loose and send you sliding into what ever is in front of you.
For $2400 you can probably expect it to be needing some clutch and/or transmission work, nothing that money won't fix.

Re: Thinking about getting a 240SX fastback
haha, i think you should get a beat up 1988 honda civic or something to make people feel sorry for you and tip you more. i did a delivery job for 1 day cuz i was savin up like mad for a car and hated it, so i feel ya pizzaman. but since you do a lotta stop and go stuff, the 240sx is NOT for you. the gas mileage isn't all that great, and you're probably gonna be payin out your ass for gas. nor is pullin up in any good condition sports car gonna give people a good impression of you. be a little more practical in your choice of cars.

Re: Thinking about getting a 240SX fastback
That kid is probably driving a 240SX around town with a salvage title, because $2400 for a '93 w/ 94,000 (BTW that's the same year as mine) is a bit low. The price can range anywhere from something like $4600 -$5300 for a 240 on a dealership lot. Of course, that's a car in good condition and with a clear title, something I seriously doubt that 240 you had your eye on had. Look at this as a blessing and find yourself a more practical car for the kind of job you have as mentioned before.

Re: Thinking about getting a 240SX fastback
Well I hope he totals it while talking on his cell phone. The dealer is getting a 90 240SX in better condition monday for 2900.. SOHC, 5 spd, power everything, spoiler, in short a SE. Did a little calculation and it will cost me about 250 to get the 90 Grand Am back on the road.

Re: Thinking about getting a 240SX fastback
My friend heard I wanted a 240 so he talked to a friend of his about letting me driving it. Just got back from drive. I want one! His had a few mods... I/H/E. It handle nicely. Never squeeled the tires going from 2 to 3 in the GTS. The clutch was very tight and I'm so used to the GTS shifter with it's 6 inch travel distance. But the 240SX was like half that. Monday I'm going back to the dealership and test drive the 90 240SX. If it handles like the one I drove..screw it I'll finance it thru the dealership and let the insurance company and bank argue between themselves about the 88 Celica GTS. I going back to work one way or another.
I had enough BS with my bank and insurance company that I'm looking for a new bank and insurance company
