It's McGiver Again...

Hi.

I just pulled the old (unused) A/C pipes and compressor out of my 92 Plymouth Voyager after doing a timing belt replacement. The A/C stopped working about 5 years ago, I had already sunk over 500 bucks into it, so I said the heck with it.

Ok here's what I'm thinking...

I'll pull out the A/C rad and move the transmission cooler over and use the A/C fan for my transmission cooler.

I wonder if these transmissions have any sort of temperature sensor I could tap into. Or I'll just control the fan via switch.

Also do you think it would be OK to bypass the main rad all together and just cool the trans. via the trans. cooler only. The trans. cooler is pretty big on mine, about 1/3 rd. the size of the main radiator.

And if yes...

Can I get a radiator without the trans. cooling section. As I'm do for a new rad soon anyways. Seems I change the rad on this van every two years.

Thank
Wayne.

Re: It's McGiver Again...

Why not use the a/c condenser as a trans cooler? you won't need a fan for it....

check my answer to your harmonic balancer post too.

Re: It's McGiver Again...

Ya well it ain't going to any junk yard. My backyard maybe. I finished paying on it over for years ago now. $0 per month is what I pay now.

This van has got to 300,000k easy, and I bet she'll make it to half a million if I keep driving her.

Mechanics and such always comment on how clean the drive train looks whenever I have the hood up.

I practically took apart the whole front of the engine without getting dirty.

Just because there's no A/C I should send it to the junk-yard ?! Or maybe you ment I should go on a part hunt. Been there, done that. Spring time is not the greatest time of the year to be hunting around in junk yards unless you bring your hip waders, very muddy and wet in the spring.

I'll admit that over the last two years she has started puff blue smoke.. but hey I have 1000watt sound system in her that I can just turn up so I can't hear you laughing... It work's!

A little bout my sys... Dennon Cd deck, Pioneer active crossover, Craig 400watt bridged x 2amps, Craig 400 running mids/highs. Homemade dual 12" sub woofer enclosure with kicker subs. Alpine 6x9's in the rear, factories up front with added super tweeters on the dash.

As for the other... I'm not sure what you mean... use the condenser from the a/c ? what part is the condenser ? Is that what they call a A/C rad ? a condenser ? Cause that's all that's left, I already pulled the rest off.

I figure separating the two rads has got have a small cooling benefit. The trans. cooler sits in front of the main rad right now, both are cooled from the same fan.

When I pick up the longer transmission lines I'll let you know how it turns out.
Cheer's

Re: It's McGiver Again...

yeah, it's the A/C "rad".
Make sure you clean it out good first. You need compressed air and some solvent (gas will work) then push some +3 ATF through it to get rid of the gas. Hook it up and viola: extra cool tranny.
