We just started up a 3-car projekt in our garage here at PBZ - Sweden (www.PerformanceByZ.se).
We're rebuilding one R33 GT-R V-Spec, one Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Evo1 (red) and one Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Evo2 (black). The Skylines is being built to be a fast road/track car. The red Evo, wich is a customer car is going to be built only for doing fast 1/4-mile runs on track/street. This project will be built in two stages because of shortage of time. There is a big racing cup on the streets in Sweden called "Birka Cup". The Evo1 will participate in this event wich starts in about 1½ weeks from now. More about Birka Cup: From the beginning, this cup was started as a protest to the closing of a big 1/4-mile track in Stockholm. Now the popularity has grown and we have 8s-cars participating in this racing event that is run on the streets around Stockholm. Here's a trailer from the DVD from last years event: Low Quality: http://cosworth.mine.nu/mull/birkatr...trailer.lq.avi High Quality: http://cosworth.mine.nu/mull/birkatr...trailer.hq.avi The black Evo2 will be built to do fast 1/4-miles, but will also have modified suspension etc. for trackdays. Our hopes are that the Skyline should make somewhere around 600hp, the red Evo1 at stage 1 aound 400hp, but after this season it's getting rebuilt completely and no specific goals nore restrictions are set for the project for now. The black Evo2 will hopefully make around 500hp when it's ready. Here's some pictures from the garage with three Evo's and our Cossie lined up: Here's a pic from the black Evo2. We have already fitted a 500+hp turbo in it. Exhaust manifold, downpipes etc.. will all be changed to performance part. Red Evo's IC: Here's the Skyline that we're building: The story with the Skyline is a long one and very unfortunate. In August last year we ran some cars on a flight strip for some interviews and articles for a couple of online auto-sites. It was a very hot day and just at the end of the day, a rough ticking noise came out of the Skyline engine. After a visit to a well-reputed garage, we came to the conclusion that the fault has to be with the tappets in the head. The head was seperated, totally rebuilt and reconditioned, and everything was eventually put back together. Due to lack of time, this took about 6 months. Finally we started up the car... exactly the same ticking noise as before was there again! So now we're going through everything and will try to make it more or less bullet-proof.Here's were we start off, with uprated original turbo's, bigger exhaust port manifolds, but otherwise, more or less original. Head off and one turbo & manifold off. [imh]http://www.performancebyz.se/bilder/Projekt/PICT0018.JPG[/img] The heap of Skyline-parts keep rising ![]() Check out the difference between the reconditioned head, and none-touched block: ![]() Block is out: ![]() Our garage's watch dog. Beware, very wild and crazy ![]() ![]() We found traces of what could be the problem in the oil pan: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Somewhere in there, we should find the source to the problem: ![]() More Skyline parts: ![]() Original crank, pistons and rods: ![]() Original bearings, not in the best condition: ![]() The one to the right is totally wasted, the one to the left... I don't have a word for: ![]() This is how far we have come in the project. What's left now is more or less the fun part of the project, fitting the engine with yummies ![]() We're thinking about going with Crower rods and Wiseco pistons. As for cams, we're planning on running on Tomei ones. Wich duration and lift we should use has not been planned yet. We could need some expert opinions. We want very fast responce, that's what we have decided so far. The turbo's will probably be a pair of GT2540's. Anyone has an oil-cooler for sale? If anyone of you has anything that you think we might need for the engine/car, don't hesitate to contact me at . I'll keep you guys updated with the projects as they proceed. I'll greatly apprechiate tips and advice and that you share of your experience. Regarding the Skyline, I don't have any experience at all so the more info we get, the better. I'll be back ![]() Regards, Arash |

Re: 3-car project! Skyline R33 GT-R, evo1 & Evo2
Too bad the pics didn't show up! I would have liked to see the EVO's since I own a black '94 EVO GSR.
Keep us informed how this goes! Although post the EVO stats on the Lancer board please for continuity. There's also not much info there for older Lancers and the experience with the cars would be very helpfull. |

Strange, I can see the pictures perfectly. Try right-clicking on the box where the pictures should be and copy the picture url and paste it into another window.

Re: 3-car project! Skyline R33 GT-R, evo1 & Evo2
The pics load for me.
GTR2b are you behind a firewall? or possibly on a dail up? There are a LOT of pics, and they are rather large. It took a while to load my ADSL, I should imagine a dail up connection would simply no load most of the pics. That looks like a very cool project you have going Arash|PBZ, and this is one of the most detailed and indepth threads Iv seen in a long long time (and Iv beening this for a long long time). Please keep us updated on the progress of your cars.

Arash,
If you want fast response, 2540s are not the way to go. You would be better off using the 2530, or even better yet 2510s, or the new GT-SS. As for cams it really depends on what the car is going to be used for. I really like the 264/9.1 or so. They are a much better suited for a performance turbo over the stock cams, but you will not lose drivability. 272 are too big for my taste, but then again depending on who you are, you could think the 272s are just too small depending on the application they are intend for.

Re: 3-car project! Skyline R33 GT-R, evo1 & Evo2
SkylineUSA:
Thanks for the advice. The reason I'm thinking about going with the 2540's is simply because I have a pair of these in good condition. I'd rather just use these than to sell them and look for another set of turbo's. I could always swap the for another set, or a single turbo if I'm not pleased. I have learnt that the 2540's are slower in spool up compared to e.g 2530's. I think that with the right mapping and calculation of cams and cam-settings, you still could have them spool up quite early. The problem is only that this whole cam-issue is totally new for me and I really need to come in contact with someone that has more experience about it. Best regards, Arash Performance By Z |

Yes, you can decrease the spool time with bigger cams, but if you go too big it will effect other aspects of the engine. Its a give and take type of relationship. Of course you know that. I personal would not use them unless the engine was stroked to a 2.7 at least for the extra volume to push that size of a turbo.

Re: 3-car project! Skyline R33 GT-R, evo1 & Evo2
I am on AF most often from work so my firewall was being a butt and I have a POS computer at my desk.
I got to see the photos REAL well from home! Arash, Like I said, I'm VERY interested in following your progress on both of your EVO's since it's next to impossible to find info on those cars that's in english. VERY nice cars! (sorry to all the Skyline owners for drooling over the EVO's) I'll be buying my GT-R soon enough. Damn I love living in Japan! |
