Achieva Questions

Ok folks, I know there are those of you out there who have Achievas yet no forum. I'm confident that there will be an Achieva sub-forum in the Oldsmobile forum when the next list of forums is added. However, until that point, I've started this thread for those of you with achieva's to ask questions AND get information on your car. So, POST AWAY!

-Jon

EDIT: Welcome everyone to your newly added forum. All of you achieva owners may now post to your hearts content about your cars, whether they be questions, comments, or ideas. I've left the questions in this thread here for those who posted them in the first place. As I said in the last post of this thread (for those of you who are too lazy to read it) if anyone has an unanswered question in this thread, please feel free to post that question as a new thread.

Please all members remember to abide by the rules instated by the AF administration as they apply to all subsequent forums of AutomotiveForums.com and if you have any questions about anything, please don't hesitate to PM any of the mods. Thank you

Jon

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum. I am in a slight dilemma. I need to swap a head gasket on a 95 achieva with a 2.4L. My question is this....

The Chilton's manual suggests using some special tools. They are J series tools, which I can only assume stands for J Body. I have been trying locate these special tools, but am struggling to find them. I have called a couple of dealers, and a few auto parts stores. Have searched on the net, and eventually found my way to this forum. The special tool described is for stabilizing the motor so I can remove the manifold. Has any one tried something else or perhaps know where I can find these tools.

1st tool = Engine Support Fixture J 28467-400
2nd tool = Engine Lift Hook J 28467-312

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks In advance

Re: Achieva tools

sounds like my 3.1 v-6 acheiva. today i took it to the shop to get serpentine belt installed . the engine actually had to be supported while the motor mount on pass. side was disconectted. with fancy procedures like that , it,s no wonder that you need special tools. i should have kept my corolla!!!!!!!

Re: Achieva Questions

just support the engine by the oil pan.

I have a mostly stock 1992 3300 SC and a 1994 3100 SC

the 3100 has or will have in the next month:
polyurethan upper mount
ffp poly lower mount
ffp underdrive pulley
Ported/gasket matched UIM an LIM
full mandrel bent exhuast from downpipe back with magnaflow cat
Magnecore wires

plus my stereo

if any of you have ever been on GMpower.net or gmperformancetuning.com then you probably already know me.

The "J" tool is specific to GM vehicles..up untill 03 all GM special tools began with the "J" prefix
The engine support tool you are looking for is rather pricey from GM..try Snap-on tools, they offered their own a while back and although you will be shocked at the price, its cheaper than the "j" tool

DO NOT! support that engine by the oil pan...the oil pan is cheap aluminium and will crack if too much pressure is put on it

I've done it plenty of times, you just need to seperate the jack and the oil pan with a soft piece of wood.

Heck thats even the way it tells you to do it in the 2 volume 1000 page dealer shop manual.

well it may crak if you lift it with just a plain jack, but a block off wood seperating the jack and the pan will prevent it from cracking, trust me, I've done it atleast 10 times on each of my two cars and a few time on my dad's old 97 mailbu. If my scanner was hooked up I'd scan the page page for you.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I have decided to make my own jig. I have gotten a piece of square tubing, and purchased some metric couplings and thread rod(m* x 1.25). The tubing will lay across the cowling of the engine with a drilled hole through it for the couplings and thread rod, which will be attached to the alternator studded bolt. It should work good, hopefully. I let you know if the motor hits the concrete or not

Re: Achieva Questions

'94 olds achieva, dohc quad 4 motor. running verrrrry rough, took apart the airbox, no obstructions. there was a vacuum looking hose coming from the exhaust manifold to a 3" x 5" box on top of the intake, it's got a sensor connected to it, and a larger line runs from that to the airbox. i disconnected the larger line (after replacing the almost non-existent smaller line) and it calmed down. i noticed there was what appeared to be exhaust gas coming out of it, it was a smoky white puff occasionally. i'm thinking this is the EGR, and either the box is bad or the sensor is bad. any ideas? what else can i check?

i don't need this car right now, but i am thinking about when winter comes - i'd like to be able to depend on the car like i have for years.

I recently bought a 92 Acheiva S.. I have been looking high and low but I can't figure out whether I have the standard 130HP engine or the optional 160HP engine.. I have tried various VIN Decoders but none will give me the HP.. the one thing usefull I got out of the VIN was the engine type it is a 2.3L I-4 MPI HSC was wondering if anyone could help me out..
