whining sound
I have a 1992 ford tempo and it's making a whining sound when you are first starting to drive. It may also be making the sound (hard to tell) when you are highway driving. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Whining Sound
No it doesn't make the noise when I turn the wheel. Only when accelarating on the gas pedal.

I know the sound you're talking about! I can remember it from back when I was a kid. We had one of the early Escorts, and it made that sound. At that age, I didn't really understand the mechanics of the car, but I think the noise was coming from the transmission. I've never heard the sound since, but it is firmly burned into my memory.

First thing I would do (if your sure its coming from the tranny) would be to check the transmission fluid level and see if its at the correct level. Also check the fluid and make sure its not burned (will look black or dark brown with a burnt smell), if it looks Milky (whitish or nontransparent pink), also look for varnishes (if you see a brown coating of such on the dipstick) this would mean your fluid has broke down which is very bad. If its not, I would simply replace the fluid with new fluid and put in a new filter, and then drive it to see if it still makes the sound. Check your service manual, and it will show you what you need and how to change your fluid.
