Kit Car

Kit Car magazine, March 2000 issue, pp. 56-58
by Harold Pace
reprinted with permission

Although Demitrios Koroneos (aka Jimmy The Greek) has been building Exotic Illusions Eurosex 1000 and 2500 model kit cars since 1986, he especially enjoys building turnkey cars for discriminating clients. His latest project was this replica of the 25th Anniversary model Lamborghini Countach. in 1988, Lamborghini celebrated its 25th birthday by unveiling an upgraded Countach with new OZ racing wheels and Pirelli Zero tires. A cleaner front air dam and rear bumper were added, along with revamped side-mounted radiator and engine air intakes. On the 5000S, there were short box-like radiator scoops that sat atop the rear fenders. while the 25th Anniversary model had longer scoops that extended to the rear of the fenders and had the outlet vents built in. The outlet vents changed from horizontal slats to vertical ones, and the engine cover went from two separate boxes to a single centrally located bulge on the Anniversary edition. This is the Lambo model that Koroneos duplicated for his client, Antonio Cipolla.

Cipolla, an electrical contractor, wanted an exotic sports car he and his wife could drive on a daily basis. This left out even original Lambos, whose suspect mechanicals preclude trouble-free motoring. He checked out a number of kits before deciding on the 25th Anniversary model built by Exotic Illusions. A V-6 and automatic transmission were chosen for this Fiero-based kit that would see regular use.

Starting with an '86 Fiero with only 32,000 miles, Koroneos added Monroe shocks and struts with new springs. The brake system was completely rebuilt with new rotors, pads, brake lines, and emergency brake cables. The exhaust was replaced and a Stage III performance chip was installed, along with a 160-degree fan switch and thermostat.

Koroneos hand-laid the body starting, with a 5000S-style body and then adding the 25th Anniversary pieces separately. He even made the special 25th edition grilles by hand. When the body was ready, the chassis was modified by chopping the top and welding-in reinforcements in the door sills and roof rails. Koroneos then had the engine computer analyzed and tuned up (an excellent idea for any kit builder--the engine is a lot easier to get to with the body off).

After setting the body in place, Exotic Illusions' body man Gary Hunsinger-lined up all the panels and evened the gaps on the doors and panels. The headlight panels were also adjusted, along with the rear deck. Glistening Corvette Super White paint was applied by Joe Moore, who has been painting cars for Exotic for years and is a longtime friend. When the car was returned two months later, Koroneos had the chassis pressure-washed, and painted the underside gloss black. Wiring whiz Mike Eden installed a custom stereo system with a Viper voice-actuated alarm, a remote starter, and remote door openers.

The tan all-leather interior (above) was done by Rich Warren, who takes time out from his antique furniture business to handle Exotic Illusions' interior work. After a 500-mile shakedown, the car was displayed at the Carlisle kit car show and then delivered to its new owner. Koroneos estimates he could build a similar car for about $45,000, and his next project will have a V-8 conversion for performance to match the exotic look.

Exotic Illusions makes stock length and stretched 98-inch wheelbase versions of the 5000S and 25th Anniversary Lambo models. The Eurosex 1000 is a replica of the 5000S, while the 2500 replicates the 25th Anniversary model. A basic Eurosex 1000 kit starts at $5,500, while the 2500 costs another $3,000. The basic body package includes the complete body, front spoiler, rear wing, scoops, inner liners, and hood and deck lids. The hood and deck have built-in inner liners for a finished appearance--very rare in Lambo replicas. Also, the doors, decks, and pop-up headlights are all pre-hung and installed. A hardware package adds $1,500 to this price, but includes the front frame section, support rails and uprights, side filler panels, and original Lambo aluminum grilles, louvers, door props, latches, and strikers.

The custom interior package ($1,500) includes a gauge cluster with seven VDO instruments. A fiberglass instrument pod, dash top, console, door panels and a rear window surround panel add to the hospitality. The window glass package runs another $650 and it includes a windshield, rear glass, and door windows. An original Lambo curved windshield would add $500 to the package price.

Special 15-inch Compomotive three-piece wheels (9" front/12" rear) mount 225/50-15 and 295/50-15 tires, respectively. No adapters are required, and wheels include center caps and nuts. Exotic also offers a lighting package that includes front and rear lights with Halogen headlamps.

These packages can be ordered in stages. The Stage I kit retails for $9,500 and includes a body, hardware, and the labor and parts required to prepare your Fiero chassis for the new bodywork. This involves cutting off the roof, trimming the framerails, and welding in steel reinforcements. A Stage II package ($17,500) adds the lighting package, a mounted body, headlight wiring, and the installation of the headlamp motors, deck, hood, and rear trunk section (this includes some welding). For the easiest kit of all to assemble, the Stage III ($25,000) comes with the interior package and has the doors installed with latches and solenoids, the dash installed with the gauge package, and all wiring completed.

If even this sounds like too much of a project, consider a turnkey model like the one shown for between $35,000 (Fiero running gear) to $50,000 (for the new V-8 version), depending on options and running gear. All turnkey models are tested for 300 to 500 miles before delivery and come with a one-year warranty.

For a less-expensive alternative, Exotic Illusions also offers the E1000 Deluxe body package set up for an uncut Fiero chassis. For $15,000, this kit includes the body. hardware, interior, lighting, glass, and wheel and tire packages. A custom wheel, ANSA exhaust tips, weatherstripping and carpet are also included. Although the wheelbase is kept stock, the chassis will still need to be altered for body installation. A stretch version is available at a higher price.

Exotic also sells many original Lambo parts for use on its other replicas. The curved front windshield ($600), front light assemblies ($300), and taillights ($600) are a few of the pricey parts that can add to the look of authenticity of your kit.
