Theft system causes no start

Please help me...

I have a 97 sunfire, 4 cylinder. Throughout some of the damp weather my car has been having trouble starting. I realize this could be spark plug wires which I intend to have checked.

However, recently when starting the car the theft system light comes on and the car tries to start but can't. If I wait a few minutes and try again it will often start. Or I can use the car starter and it will usually start.

Also, there is now a smell of gas under the hood.
My car has been recently checked for leaky injectors etc. No leaks were found anywhere in the vehicle.
The mechanic said to try the vent system under the side panel.

Any idea where this is going? Where would u start if you were me?

Re: Theft system causes no start

that suff is an everday thing for me.for starters the anti-theft system is getting shorted out. u need to have it checked out .next the gas smell could either be from your exust or the vent like the mechanic said. On sunfire's all electronics run in a circlura motion.Everthing runs through your radio before it goes to your cars computer. If u have put in a sterio in your car that could be the start of the problem. I spent around 300 dollars to have my anti-theft problem fixed and mine was 5 months after I bought the car

I have a 97 Sunfire that is doing the same thing. Except, I can't get it to start at all. It tries to start and has started but it run above an idle if that. I have a live monitoring scan tool and it says nothing. How do you reroute the anti-theft? Please email me at [email protected]

The only time I have ever had problems with my theft system is when I use my command start.... just thought I'd mention that. Usually I just wait a few mins.. and it corrects itself.

Wink lol

oh yah. the gas is comeing from a leaking fuel injector because the rubber gasket went bad on it.cheap to fix. or the gasket on the throttle body is torn. even cheaper to fix. i fix everything myself on the sunfires so hit me up.

My car has been doing the same thing lately the theft system light would come on and the car would die as soon as i got it started. I took it to a dealer and had it checked they told me that if the key is wore down some then the key switch will send a code to the computer it thinks that some one is useing the wrong key. If this happening with both keys the it is the key switch its self . So i let them change my key switch and ive not had a problem with it so far.
