1990 Lumina Stalls

Please help me.

My1990 Lumnia 3.1 have stalls problem for 2 weeks. I get some useful information here. But still can not figure out what the problem is. I bring car to mechnic shop, computer diagnositic no problem.

The car starts OK, and ran for several miles, and some time stalls at stop light. Most time, I can restart again and run a short time, and it will stall at stop. If I park car for overnight or several hour, it will run little longer. Warm temperature also increase the stalls chance. The car run pretty good on driving gear. It only stalls at stop.

Any idea welcome.

Im So Sorry To Here This (Really) Im Having That Same Problem With My Car I Have A 1994 Lumina v6 3.1 And My Car Is Doing The Same Thing I Just Got It It Was Driving Fine Then All Of A Sudden It Just Stall On Me After Turning On To A Street.

i don't know what the problem is so far i try ever thing.
i changed spark Plug's and wire's, i changed fuel filter,
i changed air filter.

i have a Pcv Valve i want to replace but i do know where it go.s
i really though this here site will help me but I get some useful information here so im giving up im bring it to the shop and let them deal with it (wish me luck)

i Real Like These Car's "Lumina" i Had one in 1997 but trade it in for a 1994 Gt Mustang sold that and now i back with a Lumina and having this problem.

Stall problem is kind of common problem for Lumina and also give easy way to earn money for car repair shop.

First I spend 79 $ to hook up computer diagnostic. They said I need change Craftsensor and ignition module for 600$. I gave up. And took car to another shop, they change MAP Sensor for 100$. Stall problem is still there. This time I don't want to spent too much to repair this car.

From other threat just several ahead, I know may be change craftsensor may help. I will try this at last time. Mechnical people said if you change one, you need change two, including ingition module. They said this two links together. If one goes bad, anther one also goes bad soon.

Any idea for this. Change one or change both.

I have the same exact problem....

I was told that if it was the Ignition Control Module (ICM), that the car would not start right back up... I dont know how true that is since I'm not a mechanic.

I changed thermostat, thermal sensor, wires, plugs... still have same problem.

One thing you can try to see if it helps somewhats is put the DEFOG on and drive it like that. That automatically turnes the radiator fan on to draw cool air through. Dont confuse it with defrost..

My 1990 was doing that for about a week. One mechanic I took it too, said I needed to clean the fuel injectors. He did something to clean them temporarily and I still have yet to get them cleaned. That was about 8 months ago.

It would drive fine, but come to a stop and it would die. It would start back up no problem at all, but it would run rough. When coming to a stop I'd usually put it in neutral and give it a little gas and just coast to a stop. When it was in neutral, the engine stayed running.

Don't know if that'll will help. All I believe the solution to my problem is to get the fuel injectors cleaned, even though I have yet to do that myself. Let me know if this helps.

i have i 91 lumina and had the same stalling problem.
i found out that it was the torque converter selenoid.

tons of those cars have had problems with the TCC(torque convertor clutch) solenoid sticking, as mentioned by saddddd you could try unpluging the wire(s) for it at the tranny and see if it goes away. what i would do first is give the throttle body a good cleaning and the iac(idle air controller) your mechanic should have checked those first, maybe he did i have no idea. if you had a sensor problem/ module i'd say your car would just randomly die at any speed while driving and may be affected by temperature or humidity.

I have a Chevy Lumina APV 1990. It will be running fine then it will start to stall, if you stop it will stall. You then can put it in park and it will start and idle fine, no problem. Once you take it out of park and put it in drive it probably will die if not it will rattle severely.

Any ideas???

disconnet the TCC wire on the Tranny and see if the stalling continues. See 2 posts up from this.. Posted by AMAC209

Thanks for all useful suggestion. I am still in trying.

Four days ago, I have fuel filter changed and run on high way for around a hour (may help clean fuel injector). Car run powerful and a little better, three days no problem. Yesterday, stall problems comes out again.

I haven't try IAC, craft sensor, TCC line yet. All these repair or replacement sounds cheap repair and may work. The goodthing is the car is still running. I will try one at one times. May be unplug the TCC line first. :-). It is free.

Yes, Try the TCC first... I replaced numerous items until I stumbled upon this forum site about these problems. Unhooked the TCC 3 days ago and no stall yet (crosses fingers). After an internet search, it seems common in almost all chevy cars from the late 80's to the mid 90's.

Does anyone know were the TCC is located on this van. Can't see it on the outside of transmission or under the pan and filter. Is it under the side cover??

Open the hood, look under the tube that connects to the air cleaner. Look very closely at the top front of the tranny, you will see a BLUE clip (it clips on the bottom side of the blue clip) and there should be two wires coming from it. Unhook that and give the van a decent run around.

The switch clip is slightly hard to see at first but with a good light, you should spot it quickly.

Again, its not under the car.. you can find it by looking into the front of the engine compartment.

I am sorry to hear about all those problems. anyway i have spent some time reading your thread because it could be related to my problem. My car stops accelerating at about 70 mph or 50 mph. It loses speed and pressing on the gas does nothing. It then comes to a stand still. Turn off, turn back on and drive again. It has done this 3 x. in the last week. Any ideas.

OK, by craft sensor, do you mean crank shaft sensor? I would like to also add that this happened to me such a long time ago with my '90 2.5 lumina, that I almost forgot about it, but one time, I was driving, and the thing would run good untill I accellerated above 50 miles an hour. Then when I came to a stop, would idle great, but then when I went to go, I gave it gas, and it died, and it started right back up, idled good, I gave it gas, it died again, started, died, started, died. This kept going on and on, till I could accellerate slow enough to keep it from dying. Well, I drove it to the nearest mechanic and explained everything. He popped the hood, got out a wrench, and I believe pulled a fuse in a fuse box on the passenger side of the car, towards the front of it, I'm not sure anymore, he also told me that he believed it to be the "Overdrive Converter". I have never heard anything like this before, but he said he disconnected it. I got in, drove it home perfectally, no stalling, nothing, although I did notice I had no overdrive, coincodence?. When I got home, I got to my mechanic, and said, the overdrive converter is bad, he replaced it and the problem was solved. The only problem is that this happened so long ago, and I never saw the part, or where it came from, so I have no idea what one is. Or where to start looking for one, but if your problem seems anything like mine, you might want to check that fusebox for a fuse for something that sounds like an overdrive converter, and pull it, and run the car to see if anything has changed.
