Somebody help! 2000 Corolla problem

I need help getting a friend's car fixed. The garage told her that it needed an EGR valve & gasket, so I tried to be a friend and locate one for her. Parts stores said that 2000 parts are too new to carry and to call the dealerships. So I called a few Toyota dealers and they all say that the 2000 Corollas don't even have an EGR! So what's up with this car? She says that she can floor it and barely hit 20mph then all of a sudden it jumps up to speed. The garage already said it's not the transmission, the same morons who told her it would be over $400 to replace an EGR valve & gasket that the dealers say she doesn't even have. Her engine light is on but other than that it's not smoking or anything. So what is going on here? Can someone please reply and let me know?

have you looked at the transmission fluid? is it full and look and smell clean?
