tachs

i have a 97 sentra gxe and am always scared of over revving my engine when i am driving. does anyone have any suggestions on getting a tach and what company i should get. i dont want to spend a lot of money. i just want something to tell me when i am about to blow the motor so i can make up an excuse to my dad on why the engine blew. also does anyone know where the engine peaks in this car? is it around 5 or 6?

Re: tachs

The sound of the engine is your best bet. You have to program your redline on most aftermarket tachs. So you still have to be able to hear the motor rev its limit so you know where to mark/program the redline.

The motor should start redlining around 5 1/2 to 6, so don't rev past 8 for sure.

Best thing to do is get familiar with the car. If you know your car you can feel when to shift, and when to back off the gas.

Well isnt the GA16DE rev-limiter at 6900 rpm's stock? I would just check ebay out for one that works. good luck.

Re: tachs

the car doesnt have a tach that comes with it. i would think that it would peak around 5500 or 6 at the top. it would probably blow around 8500 or 9

Re: tachs

If you had a factory tach the redline should read from 5500 to 8 or 9. So you could safely shift around 6000 without riding the revs.

A lot of unexperienced drivers will ride the redline till the motor cant give no more then shift gears, just to squeeze out extra power. All this really does is slow you down and doom your motor for a short life.

tach

the reason i have mine set at 5k is to get my attion to shift soon i shift at 6 1/2. the light gives me head up i can set the light on the tach to anything i want. just becarefull we don`t need another dead nissan out there.

Re: tachs

so a redline shift of 6 would be a good place to set the tach to. does it matter what kind of tach i get? or are they all basically the same. i need something cheap but also something that will serve its purpose and i can make the different adjustments to.

Re: tachs

The best thing to do is buy a tach that has everything you want it to, set it at 5k and take it for a spin. If it doesn't light when you think it should shift adjust it (assuming of course you get one with a light).

I can't really tell you where to set it because every one has there own preference. So set it (I'd try 5k first) then adjust as needed. The whine of the motor will let you know if you're right.

As far as tachs go I think they are all pretty universal just a matter of choosing your options (size, color, light choice, memory setting).

Re: tachs

i think that although everyone has a preference to when they shift their car and motor has a set preference which it wants to have. like shortys said if you overrev you gain no speed compared to shifting at the right time so...but ya thats a good suggestion since i have sort of learn to listen for the shift. the only problem is you cant do that with music and people in the car so...i need a tach.
