Dual Sub Box...which way to face subs?

Should I face both of the subs towards the outside, both inside, or one out and one in? I have a bandpass box. Also, is there a way to cancel the bass from my rear speakers (because it sounds horrible at high volume) and get it only to my subs? Thanks.

I've never done my subs anything but outward facing, but as far as the rear speakers, you can get a set of bipolar filter capacitors, also known as "bass blockers". They wire in series with the + lead of your speaker terminals. There are different size capacitors for different cut-off frequencies. Usually they tell you on the box but if not, you can calculate the capacitance you need fairly easily.

does it sound different when the magnet of the sub faces outward?

I'm sure it does. It pressurizes the box, not the car. It will be 180degrees out of phase with an outward facing sub, but it will push that outward facing sub harder because when the signal pushes the subs outward, the one sub will push in on the box - pressurizing it - and the outward facing sub as it is moving outwards will get pushed by the pressure behind it created by the other sub. The opposite happens when it is moving backwards. I'm pretty sure that having both subs facing inward will sound like crap, but I've seen people do subs in pairs with one inward facing and the other outward. It does look cool but I'm not sure it sounds any better if even as good. Has anyone here done this ?

The only difference is the speaker is out of phase and you might get a very very small amount of mechanical noise. If you do one backwards then make sure you wire it out of phase (wire the amp + to the speaker - and vice versa), otherwise one sub will push in while the other pushes out, and it will be like the subs are playing with no box at all. This will greatly reduce their power handling and you could destroy them pretty easily. If you mount both subs backwards then it doesn't matter, you can wire them normally or out of phase (as long as you do them together, not one normal and one out of phase), shouldn't sound any different.

The box size will also be "bigger", since you don't have the sub's chassis taking up box space anymore. It would behave like the box was ~.2cf bigger.

ive tryed my subs facing all different ways ive tryed one in, one out, both out, both in, the best response i got was one in and one out the one facing in the box pushes the lower end bass it couldnt while facing out, so yea it does make a pretty good difference at least that ive noticed on mine and another thing that works well if you have a hatchback box is put the box in upside down so that the subs are facing at an angel towards the bottom of the trunk instead of facing at an angel towards the outside (top) of the trunk again ive noticed a big difference doing this

i serously doubt that made a big difference, for me it sounds kinda the same either way i face it, so i dont even bother, but i notice if i face them toward the back seat instead of the trunk, the trunk stops rattling, and some things in the front of my car do

Cool, thanks for the replies. I guess i'll try each way and see which one I like best. One last question, does the head unit affect the sound quality of the subs? I have an old Kenwood KDC-216S head unit, and I was thinking I might have to upgrade.

Well it will affect the sound quality, I highly doubt you'll hear the difference in subs though.

changing from my aiwa to my alpine changed the quality a butt load. Also, inverted sub has sounded better to me as for now, but due to the way it is installed I am going to have to mount it normal.

for my system it did ive my box and my subs face everyway possible in a dual 12" box and the way they sit hits alot harder and sounds alot more clear then any other way ive faced them

when you are moving the face or cone of the woofer around, you are affecting where it is being placed ..... in a high or low pressure spot
